Approximately three years since its initial premiere, the crime drama “Karen Pirie” is nearly ready to return on ITV, promising viewers an exhilarating journey filled with unexpected turns and twists.
In the latest season, inspired by Val McDermid’s novel “A Darker Domain,” Lauren Lyle’s detective and her team delve into an old case involving Catriona and Adam Grant, a couple who were viciously kidnapped at gunpoint in 1984. Their investigation is sparked when the discovery of a man’s body reveals undeniable connections to the initial kidnapping incident.
During a premiere event and question-and-answer session for the upcoming season, executive producer Simon Heath was queried about any tantalizing hints he could provide. In response, he shared that viewers should brace themselves for numerous surprises – many, many surprises. Furthermore, the series will venture outside of its original setting and travel across Europe, and there will be more fantastic post-punk tunes incorporated into the soundtrack.
In other words, director Gareth Bryn stated: “It’s crucial not to assume anything; always be cautious and expect the unexpected.

In addition to Lyle, the second season features Chris Jenks and Zach Wyatt, reprising their roles from last season. Also joining the cast is Emer Kenny, who portrays River Wilde and serves as the show’s creator.
For the upcoming season 2, we have some new faces joining our cast: James Cosmo, Saskia Ashdown, Frances Tomelty, John Michie, Julia Brown, Mark Rowley, Kat Ronney, Conor Berry, Stuart Campbell, James Fleet, among others.
The summary for the season reveals that the team faces their toughest job yet due to the global notoriety of the kidnapping and persistent demands from Catriona’s father, Sir Broderick Grant (Cosmo).
Karen Pirie season 2 will air from Sunday 20th July 2025 on ITV1 and ITVX.
