As a long-time fan of both Damian Lewis and Kelly Macdonald, I must say that watching them together for the first time in The Radleys was a truly delightful experience. Their chemistry as a married couple is palpable, and their ability to portray complex characters with such nuance is commendable.
Option A: He was the lead actor in Homeland, Billions, and Wolf Hall. She gained recognition through roles in Trainspotting, Operation Mincemeat, Swallows and Amazons, and Line of Duty.
I’ve recently found myself at the helm of an engaging new cinematic production for Sky Cinema titled “The Radleys,” which is an adaptation from Matt Haig’s captivating novel. Damian Lewis and Kelly Macdonald are my esteemed co-stars in this gripping tale.
As a cinephile penning my thoughts, I recently had the pleasure of watching a heartwarming film starring two seasoned actors hailing from Scotland and England. For the first time on screen, they pair up as Helen and Pete Radley, a middle-aged couple who appear to have the picture-perfect family life, complete with two teenage offspring.
But their family has a dark secret…
Tell us all about the Radley family – what are they like?
Kelly Macdonald: Appearing ordinary, they live in the suburbs. However, beneath their surface lies a troubling group of vampires!
Damian Lewis: In essence, they’ve enrolled themselves in a rehabilitation program for vampires, aiming to shield their children from a lifestyle of being a vampire.
In a simpler and more conversational manner,
Damian: Perhaps you won’t be shocked to learn that the idea of performing two roles instead of one piqued my ego a bit. The twins symbolize the duality within us all, encompassing our base, sensual, mischievous side and our rational, practical self who gets up, goes to work, and raises children. It was an enjoyable challenge to portray both aspects.
Kelly, unlike the rest of her family, we don’t see Helen’s fangs. Was that disappointing?
Kelly: Yes, it was quite disheartening for me, as I didn’t receive the fangs I hoped for. Helen seems to be putting in more effort than anyone else to stay on the right path. Yet, she’s struggling and looking quite dejected.
Damian, this is a bit of a comedic departure for you — was that why you took the role?
Damian: No, as I’m not particularly strategic. Instead, I’m meticulous and cautious about my actions. The project and the role are always the primary factors for me. You’re correct: Henry VIII isn’t the most amusing character. However, compared to him, portraying Bobby Axelrod from ‘Billions’, a billionaire criminal whom I’ve been playing for some time now, was like a refreshing change of pace.
Could you relate at all to the peril of keeping family secrets?
Kelly: Lack of transparency unnecessarily adds weight. While you may experience a brief moment of discomfort admitting to something, that’s fleeting. The truth is then revealed, and that’s far simpler than maintaining a false narrative.
Which of the roles you’ve held has left the greatest impression on your teenage children, given that you both have extensive professional backgrounds?
Damian: Nothing I do seems to impress my kids! However, during the time of Homeland, when we found ourselves in a traffic jam, there was an enormous billboard for the show ahead. I didn’t pay much attention because Helen (his late wife) and I always tried to make our work seem ordinary. But Gully, who was five at the time, pointed out: “Dad, look! There’s a massive poster of you on the wall!
Kelly, are there any similar moments of recognition for you?
Kelly: Generally, I keep a low profile, but there are specific roles that can alter that situation. One such example is the show “Boardwalk Empire” in America; if I were in New York, people would likely call out to me as “Margaret”!
Rather uniquely, you survived being a guest star on Line of Duty. Would you go back?
Me: Reflecting on it now, it’s hard for me to turn down that opportunity. Mere mention of it stirs up PTSD-like feelings due to the unprecedented circumstances – Covid-19. I was just starting to find my rhythm when we were forced to halt production. We were the pioneers returning, but being isolated in an unfamiliar city added to the strain. I’d love to revisit filming it in a more typical world setting.
Hey Damian, it seems like you’re heading back to Wolf Hall for the follow-up titled “The Mirror and the Light”. By any chance, have you caught a glimpse of Jude Law as Henry VIII in the movie “Firebrand”?
Damian: No, I haven’t done it yet, but I was planning to message him: “Hold off on playing Henry VIII, as I’m about to take over that role, what with the great reviews you’ve been getting.” The book, “The Mirror and the Light,” concentrates on Thomas Cromwell, however, it explores Henry’s decline, deteriorating health, escalating paranoia, and his growing unpleasantness.
You’ve recently started following your musical dreams in middle age — is that gratifying?
Damian: I truly love it! In fact, I’ve composed an original tune for The Radleys. Although it isn’t synchronized with the film, it will be launched as a standalone track. Its title is Suck My Blood!
