AI-powered bot stands in for absent candidate in Virginia debate

As a seasoned crypto investor and tech enthusiast with a knack for politics, I find this AI-powered debate between Bentley Hensel and Don Beyer fascinating. It’s not every day that we witness artificial intelligence taking center stage in political debates!

Artificial intelligence can’t hide from politics, or rather politics can’t hide from AI.

Breaking with traditional politics, Bentley Hensel, an autonomous U.S. Congress candidate in Virginia’s 8th District, utilized an AI-driven chatbot for a debate when Don Beyer, the current office holder, refused to attend.

2024’s November elections are approaching, and on October 17th, a debate took place involving three participants: Hensel, another independent candidate; David Kennedy; and a digital representative standing in for someone else, named DonBot.

AI-powered debate

In his profession as a software engineer, Hensel expressed that he shifted towards AI due to what he termed as Beyer’s reluctance to participate in open, public discussions.

The bot received an intensive introduction to Beyer’s political viewpoints and was taught to articulate these viewpoints based on Beyer’s public declarations, news articles, and campaign documents. In other words, it learned to express Beyer’s policy stands using information from various reliable sources.

Previously, DonBot was developed by Hensel utilizing technology from OpenAI, but before the discussion, Hensel stated he moved the bot away from OpenAI and onto open-source models through Cloudflare Workers. Unfortunately, OpenAI suspended Hensel’s account due to his political activities.

In the future, Hensel intends to develop a simulation featuring Trump and Harris, allowing users to inquire about their views on various topics during a hypothetical debate.

As a crypto investor, I tuned into the online debate among the Virginia Congress candidates, only to encounter several technical glitches. One of these issues was that the DonBot’s responses during certain questions were inaudible, making it challenging to fully comprehend the discussion.

Supporting AI regulation

Hensel and the tech-transformed Beyer have both openly expressed their views on technology and advancements – a common approach among political candidates seeking office.

As a passionate crypto investor, I strive to champion technological advancements and promote transparency within our federal government, ensuring these innovations benefit every citizen.

Throughout his tenure, Representative Beyer has introduced bills aimed at ensuring the safety of artificial intelligence by managing potential security risks. He advocated for Congress to set definite limits on AI usage, emphasizing the need for clarity, especially in areas like politics and government.

As a crypto investor, I’ve noticed that the upcoming U.S. election is causing candidates to express their views on technological issues like cryptocurrencies, blockchain, and artificial intelligence.

These positions are closely monitored by major tech companies and influential political groups that have grown in power during the past year.
