- A new report claims Apple’s long-anticipated AI strategy could be two years behind its competitors, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
- However, Apple’s broad user base and resources could give Apple Intelligence the edge to compete with ChatGPT and Copilot on an even playing field.
- Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims Apple Intelligence will be deeply integrated across Apple’s ecosystem by 2026.
As someone who has seen tech giants rise and fall throughout my years of following this industry, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation when it comes to Apple’s foray into AI. While it’s true that Apple is often referred to as a “late-bloomer,” it’s also known for its ability to revolutionize industries once it finally takes the plunge.
I’ve frequently described Apple as a company that “came into the artificial intelligence (AI) field later than its rivals such as Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI.” This is because they have an advantage due to their earlier investments and consistent use of advanced technology throughout their technology infrastructure.
2024 saw Apple entering the AI competition during WWDC, following its unveiling of Apple Intelligence, a new AI strategy. At that point, Microsoft and NVIDIA were dominating the scene, taking turns as the world’s most valued corporation due to their substantial AI contributions, boasting a combined market valuation of over $3 trillion.
Initially, Apple regained its position as the world’s most valuable company following the announcement of its AI strategy, but according to a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s AI offering, Apple Intelligence, may already be two years behind ChatGPT from OpenAI, even before it is released.
According to Gurman:
According to some people at Apple, their generative AI tech, as it stands now, is at least two years behind the top contenders in the field.
According to Gurman, ChatGPT is noticeably superior to Siri in terms of accuracy (being 25% more accurate) and the number of questions it can answer (30% more). Given this, it appears that ChatGPT outperforms Apple’s upcoming AI offering, Apple Intelligence. However, Gurman speculates that the gap may not remain wide for long, as Apple seems to be playing catch-up with their competitors by delaying the launch of Apple Intelligence.
Apple could be setting itself up for success in AI
In the rapidly changing world of AI, two years might appear significant, but don’t underestimate Apple. Despite the slow pace they often adopt when entering new fields, Apple has a history of excelling once they get involved.
In light of growing worries about privacy and security in artificial intelligence, Apple may be strategically preparing its ground. By focusing on security and privacy aspects before diving into the AI arena, Apple might aim to minimize potential risks. A different article hints that approximately one-third of AI initiatives will be terminated after the proof-of-concept stage. While it’s a bit speculative, it could also mean taking a significant risk due to AI’s high requirements for processing power and financial resources.
For example, OpenAI faced imminent bankruptcy, predicting losses up to $5 billion within a year. Yet, investors such as Microsoft, NVIDIA, Thrive Capital, and others collectively invested $6.6 billion to save ChatGPT’s creator from financial ruin, elevating its market value to an impressive $157 billion. Interestingly, Apple was initially involved but decided against participating at the last minute without disclosing their reasons.
According to Mark Gurman, it is likely that Apple will either create their own AI technology, bring in talented professionals, or buy out other companies to become one of the leading AI firms. Apple’s enormous user base provides them with an advantage over competitors in this field.
It appears that Microsoft has faced challenges in maintaining a consistent strategy with its Windows operating system, as suggested by a survey conducted by Windows Central where over half of the respondents stated they don’t utilize Copilot. Recently, Microsoft revamped Copilot to provide a friendlier and more intuitive user interface, but this update has been met with cautious reactions, with some users stating they might switch to OpenAI’s ChatGPT if Microsoft doesn’t reconsider the changes.
In simpler terms, the report shows that ChatGPT is more popular on mobile devices than Copilot, and this popularity surge is due to the introduction of new features like OpenAI’s advanced GPT-4 model. Interestingly, users have been expressing concerns about Copilot not performing as well as ChatGPT. However, Microsoft argues that this isn’t an accurate representation, claiming that users may not be utilizing Copilot effectively due to inadequate prompt engineering practices. To address these concerns, Microsoft has launched Copilot Academy to educate users on proper usage and optimize their experience.
By 2026, most Apple devices with screens are projected to incorporate their AI technology. The iPhone SE is set to acquire these features by March, while the entry-level iPad might see an update later in the year. It’s anticipated that Apple will make its AI technology, referred to as “Apple Intelligence,” widely accessible on October 28, 2024.
