Ghost of Tsushima was a huge hit on the PlayStation 4, making it a real challenge to create a sequel that lived up to the original.
Everyone probably has their favorite Ghost game, and that’s okay! But Ghost of Yotei is a fantastic sequel. It improves on the first game while also offering a fresh perspective on samurai films.
Okay, so Yotei doesn’t start with the same huge spectacle as Tsushima did, but it definitely makes a strong, gritty first impression. And Atsu? Wow, she’s driven by her hatred for the people who hurt her when she was younger. Honestly, for a lot of the game, helping her get her revenge is just… incredibly satisfying, even if it’s a bit dark.
Like Tsushima before it, Yotei isn’t just about combat. The beautiful open world is filled with peaceful moments and encourages exploration, guiding you naturally from one interesting location to another.
The game offers a huge amount to explore and experience. This time, there’s something for everyone – Atsu can take on interesting bounty hunts, learn from different weapon experts, search for local myths, relax in a hot spring, and even get hooked on a fun coin-collecting game.
What really makes Yotei special is how naturally the experience unfolds. It’s not about simply moving from point to point; you’ll find yourself noticing distant sights and being drawn to explore other areas. This creates a truly delightful feeling of discovery.
Look, Yotei isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, and honestly, I’m glad. Ghost of Tsushima was already something amazing, and the developers at Sucker Punch were smart to build on that foundation. They clearly listened to what fans thought could be improved – things like the side quests getting a little samey and the combat not staying challenging enough later on – and they tackled those issues head-on. It feels like a really thoughtful follow-up.
Yotei’s battles are particularly memorable, especially the boss fights. The game features fantastic duels, both within the main story and as optional challenges. Combat is challenging and intense, making perfectly timed parries incredibly satisfying – it’s some of the most exciting action available on PS5.
This is another fantastic game from PlayStation Studios, and it’s poised to become even better. The Yotei’s Legends expansion is coming next year, and we expect Sucker Punch will continue to add content after that. We’re eager to return to the game and play as Atsu!
