Smile 2 ending spoilers: Does Skye pass on the curse?

As a devoted fan of horror films who has braved countless sleepless nights and jump scares, I can confidently say that Smile 2 surpassed my expectations and left me absolutely terrified – in the best possible way! The sequel masterfully built upon the chilling premise of the original, with Naomi Riley’s portrayal of Skye Riley being a standout performance that kept me on the edge of my seat.

**WARNING: Contains spoilers for Smile 2**

Similar to its predecessor, the horror movie Smile 2 has been well-received by viewers – skyrocketing to the number one spot at the box office following its release in October 2024.

In the movie, we find the central theme revolving around a vicious curse that made its debut in the initial installment. This curse causes individuals to be overtaken by an evil force, leading them to experience intense hallucinations and ultimately take their own life in front of someone – who subsequently becomes the next victim.

In the beginning, Smile 2 starts with a short recap of the ending from the first movie. The main plot then revolves around the character Skye Riley, a popular music star played by Naomi Riley, who inherits a curse following an intense and gory incident while meeting her drug supplier, Lukas Gage.

Soon enough, Skye was enduring immense hardship due to the curse, a situation that didn’t bode well for the kickoff of her upcoming worldwide concert tour.

Curious about how the latest movie ends and its implications for the series as a whole? Here’s an explanation of the finale in “Smile”.

Smile 2 ending explained: Does Skye pass on the curse?

As a cinephile, I found myself on the edge of my seat when Skye seemed to have uncovered a method to break the curse – all thanks to a nurse named Morris (played by Peter Jacobson). Previously, he managed to locate her and proposed an unconventional strategy: momentarily stop her heart and then revive her. This drastic measure, he believed, would most likely eliminate the entity, as it can’t persist without a host.

At first, Skye appeared hesitant about undergoing this process, but as events took a turn for the worse – reaching a peak when she tragically stabbed her mother (Rosemarie DeWitt) following an altercation at the health spa where she was residing – she fled and commandeered a vehicle. This stolen car became her mode of transport to the derelict Pizza Hut Morris had instructed her to go to. The trip wasn’t smooth sailing, as an entity posing as her friend Gemma (portrayed by Dylan Gelula) interfered, trying to disrupt her progress along the way.

At Pizza Hut, Skye listens to Morris’s guidance and enters a large freezer. Inside, she’s supposed to use a syringe to give herself an injection that will halt her heartbeat. Despite the entity’s attempts to prevent her, Skye manages to administer the shot. However, it turns out to be ineffective. The entity then admits that Skye is still experiencing hallucinations, and soon she finds herself back on stage at Madison Square Garden, ready to kick off her tour with a live performance.

As she scans the crowd, it becomes clear that her mother is miraculously alive, which means everything that transpired in the past few days was merely a delusion. What’s more shocking, the being now manifests its true form and overtakes Skye entirely, leading her to give in to the curse and ultimately end her life.

One concerning aspect of this situation is that the event was being broadcast on large screens throughout the stadium, so a huge number of spectators were witnessing it unfold. Given our understanding of how the curse operates and propagates, this isn’t exactly good news.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Parker Finn expressed that it seemed unbearably terrifying to have her appear on stage, overtaken by the Smile, in front of 20,000 ecstatic spectators, towards the end of the production.

Is it being streamed live? Could it grow massive? The experience was exhilarating to me. I cherished this sensation and the impact of the Smile, as well as its critique of celebrity culture and public influence. She might be spreading this, and the concept of her platform and fame reaching how many people.

So if we get a Smile 3, it looks like everything will be happening on an even bigger scale…
