Starship Troopers: Extermination Interview – Campaign, Multiplayer, Post-Launch Plans, and More

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that 2024 has truly been a golden year for us bug hunters. The resurgence of interest in cooperative shooters and team-based sci-fi action, as demonstrated by games like Helldivers 2, has not only validated but invigorated the gaming community. The launch of Starship Troopers: Extermination is a testament to this renewed appreciation for the genre, offering us an authentic Troopers experience that combines the charm of the classic franchise with modern gameplay mechanics.

2024 has been generous to those eagerly waiting for alien insect hunts, and following the entertaining sci-fi exploits in Helldivers 2, it’s now the turn for the genuine article to take center stage. After a period in early access, first-person shooter Starship Troopers: Extermination has now been fully released, inviting players to immerse themselves in both single-player and multiplayer experiences based on the popular action of the Starship Troopers universe. To gain insights about the game, its development during early access, and the post-launch plans of developers Offworld Industries, we were fortunate enough to ask a few questions. Here’s our interview with Gareth Woods, head of marketing, and Peter Maurice, project lead.

NOTE: This interview was conducted prior to the game’s 1.0 launch.

With the release of “Helldivers 2,” there was renewed enthusiasm for cooperative shooter games and a growing acknowledgement of their appeal, particularly in the team-oriented, sci-fi action segment. This reaffirmed our conviction that there’s a substantial market demand for such genre titles. Indeed, 2024 has been an exciting year for those who enjoy tracking down bugs (or glitches) in games.

Why did you choose to revisit the Starship Troopers franchise for this video game, considering its long history?

Gareth Woods (Marketing Lead): The enduring charm of Starship Troopers is particularly appreciated by science-fiction enthusiasts. Add to this the franchise’s themes such as collaboration, camaraderie, and humanity’s struggle against insurmountable adversity, a dash of 90s nostalgia (plus a hint of questionable government behavior), and you have the ingredients for an engaging universe that resonates strongly with modern gamers. Our aim was to recreate this classic film’s universe in a way that feels contemporary and thrilling, appealing both to dedicated fans and newcomers, offering them the “true Troopers experience”.

How did the launch of our game turn out to be perfectly timed, given that Helldivers 2 came out this year and boosted Starship Troopers’ fame again? As developers creating a genuine Starship Troopers game, how did we feel when Helldivers 2 was released?

In the launch of “Helldivers 2“, we were thrilled to witness a revival in the popularity of cooperative shooter games and an increasing fondness for team-oriented, science fiction action. This confirmed our conviction that there’s a significant demand for such genre games. The year 2024 has indeed been delightful for enthusiastic bug hunters. The favorable reception to “Helldivers 2” inspired our team, and we saw it as a fantastic chance to set “Starship Troopers: Extermination” apart with its distinctive elements such as 16-player cooperative gameplay, base construction, and the innovative Carnage system.

How have your experiences been so far during the early access phase? I’m curious about any significant insights or learnings you’ve gained, particularly from the feedback provided by the community.

Speaker: The Early Access phase has been incredibly beneficial for us. It allowed us to receive essential feedback from the gaming community about aspects like game balance, progression, and more that required adjustments. Players have shown great enthusiasm for the battle scale and camaraderie feeling. I believe Early Access has had a bad rap in some circles due to developers using it as a way to make quick cash without really utilizing its potential benefits. However, we’ve made every effort to address player feedback and incorporate it whenever feasible. One of the main points players have emphasized is the need for more variety, whether it’s missions, bug fixes, or weapons, and this is an area we are excited to explore further in the future.

In the time ahead, we’re excited to expand the single-player mode, furthering the narrative of General Rico and the Special Operations Group. This expansion will come in the form of free DLC updates for those who already own Starship Troopers: Extermination.

What size or scope should players anticipate for the single-player mode, considering Casper Van Dien’s role in it?

Woods: At first, the single-player mode functions like a one-person training ground, helping new players adjust gradually before they experience the frenzied multiplayer action. It was fantastic collaborating with Casper, who perfectly portrayed General Johnny Rico. We’re excited to expand the single-player experience in future updates, continuing the story of General Rico and the Special Operations Group. These updates will be free DLC for those who own Starship Troopers: Extermination.

Could you share with us the details of your post-release strategy for Starship Troopers: Extermination, focusing on both the single-player and multiplayer aspects?

Forest: Our plans are brimming with excitement for both solo and multiplayer modes. In the single-player mode, we will carry forward General Rico’s tale along with SOG (possibly including other notable characters from the Starship Troopers universe). For multiplayer, we have a comprehensive plan that we’ve already shared with our community, which includes numerous improvements to gameplay quality, social interactions, and new playthings, plus some Arachnids for you to crush.

Are there any plans to make the game PS5 Pro enhanced?

Peter Maurice (Project Lead): Unfortunately, we don’t have the necessary hardware for development yet, so it’s not ready just now.
