As a seasoned gamer and anime enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Studio DEEN’s adaptation of Asuka Konishi’s “Yakuza Fiance” is an absolute rollercoaster ride that has me hooked this fall. Unlike the typical heartwarming romance series, Yoshino and Kirishima’s relationship is a chaotic mess that I can’t help but be drawn to.

Anime enthusiasts often view romance series as offering a mix of sweet moments and intense drama, showcasing the evolution of the main characters’ relationship. However, Studio DEEN’s version of Asuka Konishi’s Yakuza Fiance offers something quite different – it presents a couple who seem to bring out each other’s worst traits in an engaging, thrilling ride that every anime fan should consider watching this fall.

As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “In Yakuza Fiance, I find myself as Yoshino Somei, granddaughter of a powerful Osaka yakuza family, the Somei Group. Growing up, my life was rather ordinary until my fourth-gen grandfather announces that I’m to move to Tokyo and marry the heir of another yakuza clan. Upon arrival, Kirishima, the heir, instantly rejects me as too bland. Insulted, I vow to toughen up, survive, and eventually ditch Kirishima, returning home to Osaka. By the end of the first episode, I demonstrate my determination by selling a kidney and offering the money to Kirishima out of spite, only for him to proclaim his love for me instead.

Yoshino and Kirishima are Terrible For Each Other, and That Makes Them Perfect

The relationship between Yoshino and Kirishima, while arranged by their respective families, is turbulent from the very beginning. Yoshino especially isn’t afraid to voice her disdain for Kirishima and his shady activities, but, when presented with an opportunity to help him, she often falls into the very same yakuza activities she speaks out against. In Episode 2, Kirishima is trying to track down the daughter of another family who’s allegedly gone missing. Yoshino spots her while shopping for a new hair dryer, and reports back to Kirishima. The two end up teaming up and hunting the woman down.

It’s revealed that the reason Kirishima was looking for the young woman because she had swindled members of the Filipino mafia out of 500 million yen, and ends up in an all-out brawl with her bodyguards. Despite getting hit by one of the bodyguards, Yoshino ends up stepping in to help, and the pair take down the bodyguards with a fork, their fists, and that brand-new hair dryer. Once everything is said and done, the episode skips to the following day, and a bandaged Kirishima presents Yoshino with her “cut” of the money they got back from the young woman they tracked down. Yoshino declares that she doesn’t want the money – nor that she has any use of Kirishima’s counter offer of selling his corneas – and instead demands that he goes with her to buy another new hair dryer.

Yakuza Fiance Might Not Be the Romance Some Fans Need, But the Love Story They Secretly Want

To put it simply, after just three episodes, the series Yakuza Fiance consistently delivers a thrilling, unstoppable journey. Although viewers may not want Kirishima to win Yoshino’s heart, they find themselves drawn in by his endearing personality. On the other hand, watching Yoshino involve herself in yakuza activities as she supports her fiance’s criminal endeavors is oddly captivating and entertaining. The show’s visually stunning art style, compelling characters, and intense drama surrounding a couple that should never be together makes it an essential watch for anime fans during the current season.

Moreover, the series deviates significantly from the conventional romance anime stereotypes, as its central couple, Yoshino and Kirishima, exhibit unhealthy dynamics that are far from typical. The show, titled “Yakuza Fiance”, doesn’t hesitate to highlight the issues inherent in their relationship at every opportunity, emphasizing that Yoshino is participating for her own survival and for her grandfather. This departure from the norm in romance anime makes it a standout and distinct work when compared to other titles within the genre.
