As a gamer with a nostalgic heart and a keen eye for design, I find myself torn between the new Xbox Series X consoles, particularly the Robot White model that has stirred quite a debate among fellow gamers.
Among the recently launched Xbox Series X consoles, some Xbox enthusiasts on Reddit are expressing concerns about a specific change in hardware. On October 15th, Microsoft introduced three new Xbox models: the Xbox Series S (Robot White, 1TB), Xbox Series X Digital Edition (1TB, without disc drive), and the Xbox Series X Special Edition (2TB, Galaxy Black). Unlike the standard Xbox Series X consoles, the Robot White Xbox Series X model doesn’t just offer a new color or lack a disc drive; it also incorporates an additional hardware modification.
Since the digital-only console forgoes the disc drive, its design will naturally vary from the standard Xbox Series X. Additionally, the new robot white color clearly distinguishes these two consoles as different versions. However, there’s a less noticeable alteration that may leave you wondering why this adjustment was made.
Fans of Xbox were unaware of this design alteration until they purchased the console and discovered it for themselves. Upon taking their fresh gaming equipment home and opening the box, they found that unlike the typical Xbox Series X, its grill was not green but simply black. While some fans appreciate this modification, others have mixed feelings about it.
The digital series X is missing something else besides the disk drive… No green grill. Bummer.

The article seems clear that it’s not fond of the decision to eliminate the green grill. Whether this was for budget reasons or just a matter of style, it remains unclear. Nevertheless, some enthusiasts do appreciate it. Interestingly, the comments on the previous post suggest that a significant number of fans support this change, regardless of its motivation.
The leading comment states that green on white wouldn’t have been appropriate, and black accents give a more sleek appearance instead. A second, widely-liked comment agrees, suggesting that they prefer the design without the green.
Indeed, some comments suggest that white and green might not be a harmonious color combination. However, those with a longer gaming history may recall that this color scheme was associated with the Xbox brand during the Xbox 360 era. Although the green on the consoles was rather muted, the marketing and branding for it – characterized by a prominent white and green theme – was quite striking. This goes back nearly two decades, so it’s important to remember that design preferences and trends have significantly evolved since then.
After discussing, I’d love to hear your thoughts! You can share them below, or if you prefer, connect with me on X as Tyler_Fischer_, and we can chat about it there. Do you enjoy the absence of a green grill on the latest white Xbox Series X?
