After 10 Months, Monster Hunter Wilds’ Most Requested Feature Was Well Worth The Wait

Even though Monster Hunter Wilds quickly became a best-selling game, it’s also proven to be quite controversial for Capcom. Its review scores haven’t fully recovered since launch, mainly due to performance issues. Beyond that, the game was missing several convenient features and familiar elements that fans expect from the Monster Hunter series.

With its newest fourth update, Monster Hunter Wilds is now in the best shape it’s been in since it launched, largely because a popular feature that fans have been wondering about for the last ten months has returned. Monster Hunter Wilds is already a top RPG of 2025, and this update shows even more promise for what’s coming next year for series fans.

Monster Hunter Wilds Finally Added Its First Elder Dragon

After a long wait, Monster Hunter Wilds has finally introduced its first legendary monster: Gogmazios. This fearsome Elder Dragon has been wreaking havoc on the Forbidden Lands, truly earning its reputation as a powerful and dangerous foe.

Elder Dragons aren’t just monsters – they’re incredibly powerful, unique creatures that stand apart from everything else in nature. Living for a very long time, they’re smarter than typical beasts and can’t be caught in ordinary traps. They’re essentially walking catastrophes, able to reshape the land and even control the weather, which naturally causes problems wherever they roam.

Okay, so in Monster Hunter Wilds, there were a bunch of tough monsters that felt like Elder Dragons – things like Gore Magala and Zoh Shia really pushed my skills. For a while, I was worried about what Capcom wasn’t showing us. But honestly, after seeing what they’ve done with the real Elder Dragons in the game so far, I think the wait was totally worth it. It feels like they really nailed it!

The Gogmazios hunt is a challenging, team-based encounter for eight players, split into three phases. Success depends on exploiting elemental weaknesses and coordinating quickly through several difficult stages. From beginning to end, it’s a thrilling and unique experience, enhanced by spectacular visual effects.

Gogmazios Has Always Been A Perfect Fit For Wilds

Capcom has a lot of classic monsters they could add to the game in future updates, but I’ve always felt Gogmazios would be a great fit for Wilds. The Oilwell Basin, with all its gunpowder, would be an ideal place to hunt such a large, hungry monster.

As a fan, it totally makes sense why a monster like Gogmazios would hang out around the Oilwell Basin – it fits the environment perfectly! And honestly, the fight itself could have been amazing in Monster Hunter 4, but the game just couldn’t quite handle it technically back then. It felt like it was holding back a lot of potential.

While the Gogmazio hunt still has some repeated elements and each of its three phases could have more unique attacks, the updated fight is a huge step forward. It really showcases the exciting new features of Monster Hunter Wilds, particularly in the challenging optional quest where you have fewer chances to avoid defeat.

Okay, so I’ve been battling Gogmazios in Monster Hunter Wilds, and honestly, despite what some people are saying, it’s amazing. It’s seriously challenging – one of the toughest monsters in the game, easily. And it feels like a perfect step up from fights like Savage Omega Planetes and the improved Arch Tempered monsters they’ve been adding. They really did this Elder Dragon right, giving it the respect and difficulty it deserves. It’s a fantastic fight!

Monster Hunter Wilds’ Is Finally Giving Elder Dragons The Respect They Deserve

A frequent criticism from dedicated fans of Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise was that many of the Elder Dragons felt disappointing. While Rise reduced the number of Elder Dragons compared to World, those that remained weren’t as impactful or memorable as Gogmazios from Wilds.

While monsters like Nergigante and Behemoth were memorable for their cool designs and challenging fights, the game often threw too many difficult battles at players back-to-back. Plus, monsters like Kushala Daora, Teostra, Kirin, and even Chameleos (after the initial fight) didn’t feel special enough to stand out from the rest, making them blend together.

Gogmazios was always going to be a memorable fight, as the original in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate was a large-scale hunt using cannons and a special machine called the Dragonator. However, the improved controls and spectacular finishing moves in Monster Hunter Wilds make this version of Gogmazios feel more dynamic and exciting than recent Elder Dragon battles.

This isn’t the first time Wilds has successfully reintroduced a popular monster in a spectacular way. The return of Lagiacrus, a long-requested addition, brought back the swimming mechanic that hadn’t been seen in over 16 years, since the original Monster Hunter 3.

Considering how much effort Capcom is putting into bringing back classic monsters, fans have good reason to be excited about future Elder Dragons and the inevitable, high-level expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds.
