As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for British dramas, I must say that the upcoming ninth season of Shetland has piqued my interest like never before. The emotional depth and intricate plot twists hinted at by Ashley Jensen and Alison O’Donnell promise a gripping tale of friendship, trust, and the relentless pursuit of justice.
In just a few days, we’ll be almost at the point where the ninth season of Shetland will air on BBC One, and leading actress Ashley Jensen has given a hint about the intensely emotional storyline that viewers should anticipate this year.
In the upcoming season, characters Ruth Calder played by Jensen, and Tosh, portrayed by Alison O’Donnell, will find themselves embroiled in a mystery as Tosh’s friend Annie goes missing. This event will lead them to uncover a tangled web of secrets and deceit.
Inquired about how Calder assists Tosh in handling her struggle between her professional and personal obligations in this specific case, Jensen explained: “Tosh feels a strong emotional connection to this case that slightly impacts her objectivity.
She’s making an effort to maintain a professional demeanor, but it seems to Calder that she might be stretched too thin. In response, Calder has encouraged her by saying, ‘You need to trust your own instincts and have faith in yourself.’ I think this encouragement gives Tosh a bit of support.
She went on to say: “In the past, Calder felt frustrated with Tosh because she lacked self-belief. However, this year, in a manner unique to Calder, they’ve helped Tosh gain confidence in her own choices.
Previously, O’Donnell clarified that Tosh maintains a strong sense of honesty regarding the investigation. According to her, Tosh will consistently choose what is morally correct, even if it sometimes conflicts with her personal relationships.
In such investigations, it’s common for people to feel uneasy, anxious, and suspicious about each other. Every hidden detail will likely be uncovered, leading to the exposure of many secrets. This process will undoubtedly put friendships to the test.
Except for Tosh, such unintended harm is inevitable. She endures the inconvenience, yet her main objective remains uncovering the truth and seeking justice, no matter what form it takes.
Joining Jensen and O’Donnell are additional cast members such as Steven Robertson, Lewis Howden, Anne Kidd, who will all be back for the upcoming season of Shetland. Additionally, we have Ian Hart, Vincent Regan, Ross Anderson, Macleod Stephen, and Robert Jack joining as guest stars.
Shetland returns to BBC One and iPlayer on Wednesday 6th November.
