As a devoted fan of British comedies who has spent countless hours laughing at the antics of Ghosts, I must confess that the prospect of new writers continuing the story leaves me both excited and apprehensive. On one hand, the thought of more Button House fun is tantalizing, but on the other, I can’t help but wonder if the magic could ever truly be recaptured without the original creators at the helm.
Matthew Baynton, creator of “Ghosts,” has spoken about the potential for new authors to carry on the narrative of the cherished sitcom.
The popular show that made waves at the BBC was developed by Baynton alongside his regular partners in crime Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, and Laurence Rickard. These individuals were not new to collaboration, as they had previously worked together on CBBC’s Horrible Histories and Sky’s Yonderland.
In the previous Christmas special last year, they sadly said goodbye to Button House, shedding tears as they did so. A fresh book called “Ghosts: Brought to Life” has since been released, offering viewers a behind-the-scenes look at how each episode was created – even revealing the secrets behind that heartrending finale.
This year’s companion guide, titled “Unseen Companion,” continues in the vein of last year’s “Ghosts: The Button House Archives.” It offers readers an assortment of behind-the-scenes materials that delve into the tragic backstories of the departed characters within the show.
He shared that the archives were quite intriguing, implying there was always something new to find within them. Additionally, some might seek out the collected works of Thomas, poets perhaps. There’s even a possibility to create additional stories based on those findings.
“We might not feel particularly enthusiastic about continuing with what we’ve been doing, and instead, we’re eager to explore fresh ideas together. However, it’s also possible that we may find it hard to break free from our old habits.
If the Ghosts team find themselves engrossed in another endeavor, leaving less time for creating more Button House adventures, might they be open to letting other authors contribute and enrich the universe of their series? Baynton appeared hesitant.
He went on to say, “I believe it would be quite challenging. In fact, I suspect it would be more difficult than the original concept – letting go of ownership.
However, it’s quite possible that Rob and Neil Gibbons have executed the Alan Partridge material so exceptionally well that there could be surprises in store.
Indeed, other writers could potentially do it, but the question is if we’d be willing to relax our control enough for it to occur.
Baynton added: “I doubt it – we’re too controlling.”
In a five-season BBC comedy series, the actor portrayed unsuccessful romantic poet Thomas Thorne. Since then, he’s been featured in the quirky family movie “Wonka,” which was written by the co-creator of Ghosts, Simon Farnaby, and Paul King, known for Paddington.
Ghosts is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
