OpenAI launches ChatGPT Search, autonomous AI ‘big theme’ of 2025

As a seasoned researcher with over two decades of experience in the tech industry, I find myself intrigued by the rapid advancements in AI technology, particularly the recent update on OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The “ChatGPT Search” feature is an exciting leap forward, promising to deliver more contextually accurate answers than traditional search engines.

ChatGPT, an AI chatbot from OpenAI, now boasts a new functionality that empowers it to find answers more effectively online when responding to queries.

On October 31st, the company unveiled the “ChatGPT Search” function, a tool that enables users to conduct web searches by posing questions. Alternatively, users have the option to perform manual searches by clicking on the web search button.

Goodbye search engines?

Previously, ChatGPT was restricted in its web access, but the latest upgrade promises to provide responses that are more aligned with users’ needs compared to conventional search engines.

“You can get fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources, which you would have previously needed to go to a search engine for.”

Now, users can converse with ChatGPT as if they’re talking to a knowledgeable friend. It gathers data from the internet to deliver accurate answers that fit the conversation’s context. Plus, it can respond to subsequent questions and take into account the entire chat history to refine its responses further.

The new feature builds on OpenAI’s partnerships with major news providers globally. This includes a partnership with the Financial Times, the French publisher Le Monde, Spanish Prisa Media, and German media giant Axel Springer.

It’s not just OpenAI that’s delving into AI-enhanced search; according to an October 28 report by The Information, Meta is also working on a search tool intended to rival giants such as Google and Bing in the market.

Autonomous GPT

During the unveiling of ChatGPT’s new Search functionality, a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) session took place, featuring key executives from OpenAI, including CEO Sam Altman, Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil, Senior Vice President of Research Mark Chen, Vice President of Engineering Srinivas Narayanan, and Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki.

During the session, most answers were kept minimal. However, they still gave hints about what’s to come in the near future.

This included Altman saying there will be updates to image generator DALL-E that are “worth the wait” and “good releases coming later this year,” but not something they’re calling GPT-5.

It was even more surprising when there were suggestions that ChatGPT might have some self-governing capabilities. A Redditor inquired if the chatbot could perform tasks on its own, and Weil replied that this would be a significant focus in 2025.

Although OpenAI hasn’t released any formal announcements regarding autonomous AI, the concept known as “agential AI” is broadly expected to be a significant trend in technology by the year 2025 among industry experts.
