Wiz Khalifa’s hacked X account promotes fraudulent $WIZ memecoin

  • Hackers hijacked Wiz Khalifa’s X account to promote the $WIZ memecoin
  • Celebrity-themed memecoins often lead to scams as hackers exploit high-profile accounts

As a seasoned analyst with years of experience in the digital currency market, I can confidently say that the hacking of Wiz Khalifa’s X account to promote the $WIZ memecoin is yet another example of the dark side of the crypto world. This incident underscores the need for vigilance and due diligence when investing in celebrity-themed tokens.

In an unexpected turn of events, hackers focused their attention on rapper Wiz Khalifa’s Twitter account @wizkhalifa (X), using it to advertise a memecoin called $WIZ via pump.fun. As reported by blockchain investigator ZachXBT, these hackers might be the same individuals who earlier seized control of Truth Terminal’s founder’s X account.

Wiz Khalifa’s account hacked

For a short while just before the post was taken down, Khalifa’s hacked profile publicized the WIZ token, generating a lot of excitement among fans.

The hackers noted,

“The rapper is working with my team to drop $WIZ for all the crypto fans.”

As a result, the worth of WIZ memecoin experienced a short spike, reaching an evaluation of $3.4 million during its initial 15 minutes.

Initially, this peak didn’t sustain. In less than an hour, the token’s market capitalization dropped significantly below $28,000 as initial investors quickly unloaded their holdings. As I write this, WIZ is being traded at approximately $8,400, signifying a substantial 93.67% drop in the past day, as per DEX Screener’s latest data.

This rapid rise and fall highlighted a classic pump-and-dump pattern common with scam tokens.

ZachXBT issues a word of caution

Just as anticipated, blockchain sleuth ZachXBT notified the community through a Telegram channel, posting a screenshot of a deleted tweet from Khalifa’s X account.

ZachXBT advised traders to be cautious regarding the memecoin WIZ on the platform pump.fun, as he believed a scammer had taken control of Khalifa’s account to unjustly advertise potentially fraudulent tokens.

He said,

Avoid purchasing the Wiz Khalifa Pump Fun token, as it’s suspected to be from the same hacker who recently breached Andy Ayrey, the creator of Truth Terminal.

Although the hacker’s identity has yet to be revealed, blockchain investigator ZachXBT suspects the same person was involved in both Andy Ayrey’s account breach on October 29 and the recent hacking of Wiz Khalifa’s X account.

In the instance under review, I found myself unwittingly implicated when unscrupulous individuals exploited my account to peddle a dubious memecoin known as Infinite Backrooms (IB). This digital currency seemed to be a spin-off from the intriguing AI chat experiment that eventually birthed the Truth Terminal project.

Scammers deceived more than 600,000 dollars from innocent followers by offering airdrops as rewards for promoting their Telegram group.

Other similar incidents

It’s clear that the surge of memecoins based on celebrities, such as Iggy Azalea’s MOTHER, has sparked interest among those looking to capitalize on well-known personalities by creating similar coins.

Consequently, this trend has not only been beneficial but has also given rise to deceptive practices, as cybercriminals abuse prominent profiles to advertise bogus digital currencies.

Lately, hackers have taken control of Kylian Mbappé’s X account, using it to advertise the MBAPPE token. This action led one investor to lose over $1 million when the coin’s value rapidly dropped within an hour. Similar occurrences have affected celebrities such as Jason Derulo and Metallica, who have also been victims of these incidents.
