As a cinephile with a soft spot for complex characters and gripping stories, I must say that Bad Sisters has truly captured my heart. The evolution of Grace, played brilliantly by Sharon Horgan herself, is a journey that resonates deeply – not just because it’s beautifully portrayed, but also because it mirrors the unending dance many of us seem to find ourselves in: the cycle of choosing relationships that mirror our past, until we finally break free.
We discover her in a truly beautiful setting. She’s found happiness, she’s no longer entangled with JP and has progressed in her life. However, there’s a ticking clock – her hidden guilt. In this sense, JP continues to exert control over her even from beyond the grave.
How has Grace changed since we last saw her?
Externally, she portrayed a mourning wife, but privately, she found solace in the church and developed a strong bond with a character skillfully played by Fiona Shaw. This new friend became her source of comfort.
So she’s swapped one controlling relationship for another?
Indeed, it’s quite common for us to persist in patterns, such as using the same setting on the washing machine, until we gain insight into specific parts of ourselves. Only when we sit with a therapist do we often begin to break these cycles.
Coercive control is such an important issue. Did you feel a responsibility portraying it on screen?
Indeed. Claes [Bang] and I were equally dedicated to portraying this tale authentically. It was crucial because if we didn’t make it as realistic as possible, the audience wouldn’t empathize with the sisters enough to want JP killed. We needed to evoke deep sympathy for Grace. Moreover, you never know who might be watching. There will likely have been many who can relate to such a situation, and hearing their story told could be incredibly impactful for them. Therefore, it’s essential that we do justice to the narrative.
Did you research or talk to anyone who’d been in that situation?
Through my professional endeavors, I’ve engaged in numerous projects that included collaboration with Women’s Aid, and I’ve visited safe houses. During these experiences, I’ve had the opportunity to converse with women who are survivors of violent and controlling relationships. Therefore, I’ve been privy to discussions with individuals who have personally encountered such situations.
Do you share any traits with Grace?
We’re quite distinct, truly. Yet, I tend to look for the positive aspects in individuals, similar to her. However, unlike her, I don’t ignore or deny the negative aspects that often come with that positivity.
How is it working with your on-screen sisters?
These women are hilarious and remarkable, each and every one. Spending time with them is simply delightful. Being in their company feels like being part of a close-knit group of sisters. Since I don’t have any sisters myself – I only have an older brother – it was truly special to experience that dynamic firsthand.
Who would you say is the strongest Garvey sister?
I’m not sure if you can do it, as each character possesses unique qualities. That’s just how human beings are – we’re complex and multi-faceted. Sharon’s writing is particularly clever because she doesn’t stereotype her characters into predefined roles like the Spice Girls. Instead, each character is richly developed with a variety of traits, which makes them more interesting for the audience to follow. This complexity mirrors what the audience desires – they want to engage with complex characters.
