New Nintendo Switch Online SNES Surprise Takes Users Back to 1995

As a 90s kid who grew up with the SNES and cherished every moment spent exploring virtual worlds, this latest Nintendo Switch Online surprise has me reminiscing about my youth! The announcement of the “Mother 2 30th Anniversary Campaign” is like a dream come true, especially since EarthBound (or Mother 2, as it was known in Japan) holds a special place in my heart.

As a devoted gamer, I can’t help but get excited about the latest surprise for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers! This time warp takes us back to 1995, right smack in the heart of the ’90s gaming era. Whether you’re on your classic Switch, the compact Switch Lite, or the shiny new OLED model, get ready to revisit some iconic titles that ruled our arcades and home consoles.

1995 was relatively modest when compared to more recent years, but it still boasted a significant number of standout releases. The list provided is by no means comprehensive, yet for its time, it was an impressive year filled with impressive titles. Notably, EarthBound (referred to as Mother 2 in Japan, where it was released a year prior) was also launched in North America that same year.

Since the 1990s, EarthBound/Mother series hasn’t received enough backing, leading to its decline and current position far from major Nintendo franchises such as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Fire Emblem, and others that were also launched in the 90s but have continued to thrive and gain significance over time. However, it does still have a dedicated fanbase who will appreciate the upcoming free offering on Nintendo Switch Online.

This week, Nintendo unveiled the “30th Anniversary Campaign for Mother 2,” offering exclusive EarthBound emblems for Nintendo Switch Online members who can claim them using their accumulated Platinum Points from November 25 until December 9.

In this case, as usual, the icons will earn between five and ten Platinum Points. After collection, you can keep each icon at no additional cost, even if you don’t have an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Unlike certain Nintendo Switch Online deals, this one doesn’t require the Expansion Pass tier to access it.

It’s uncertain if these icons will only be available for use in Japan. But here’s a workaround: If you’re a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber living outside Japan and are interested in any of the icons listed, you can switch your region to access them. After obtaining the icons, you can change your region back to your original one.
