As a lifelong fan of British television who has witnessed the rise and fall of many beloved series, I must say that the return of Gavin & Stacey was nothing short of miraculous. After years of speculation and unanswered questions about whether we’d ever get another installment, it was a delight to see the gang back together again.
Did you ever worry that Gavin & Stacey might never return?
“It’s never wise to rule out possibilities entirely. After all the years of waiting and addressing people’s curiosity about future installments, it didn’t surprise me much when another one was released. I don’t foresee the BBC ending the successful series anytime soon.
So there may be scope for more?
Essentially, we’ve crafted an exceptional, climactic conclusion to the culmination of about two decades of our efforts. Time will tell!
Was playing Mick again emotional?
It wasn’t until we were nearing the wrap of the shoot that I began to feel emotional. Then it struck me – this might be our final gathering as a team. Given that I was there from the very start and have witnessed people grow from their 20s to pushing 50, it’s incredibly insightful. Now, I find myself in my senior years, while I was still respectably in my 60s when we began this journey.
There’s extreme secrecy around the details of the final episode. How did you find that?
As a passionate cinephile, I’ve found that people are always eager to delve deeper into the secrets of our work. However, if someone asks me about it directly, I often compare the situation to unraveling a delicate knitted garment. If you tug on one thread, everything else starts to come apart. So, to preserve the mystery and integrity of our process, I choose not to disclose any specific details. That’s my stance.
You’ve mentioned that you added some of yourself to playing Mick. Are you similar?
I’m quite fond of Mick and I take pleasure in interacting with him since he has a soft heart. When I portrayed Archie Mitchell on EastEnders, that aspect of my personality wasn’t one I felt comfortable revealing, but Mick is more in line with the character I truly am.
What was it like reuniting with Alison Steadman, who plays your on-screen wife, Pam?
In our professional partnership, Alison and I share a delightful dynamic. Collaborating on these roles brings us joy, and it’s heartwarming to witness the blossoming love between them. The audience seems captivated as they watch our fictional family thrive, with love serving as their guiding force.
Lastly, is there any news about Mick and Pam’s feelings towards Charles and Camilla, given that they are now the King and Queen?
