Troy Baker’s original reaction to Indiana Jones game: “There’s no way you should do that”

As a fan with a deep-rooted affection for both Indiana Jones and Troy Baker, I find myself utterly captivated by this heartwarming tale of serendipity and determination. Troy’s journey to embody the iconic hero is not just an impressive feat but also a testament to his admiration for the character and his unique connection to the franchise.

Initially, Troy Baker, who will bring an exceptional portrayal of Harrison Ford’s voice and demeanor in the upcoming game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, originally attempted to suggest other actors for this role.

In a recent chat with TopMob Gaming on YouTube, this legendary video game voice performer shared that initially, he felt the idea wasn’t suitable for execution.

In an unexpected turn of events, my friend, Travis Willingham, approached me in November of 2020, saying, “Hey, I’ve got an audition for Indiana Jones.

In a moment of candid reflection, I found myself gazing at him, uttering, “I fear your endeavor is misguided. It’s unfathomable to me that you would even consider taking on such a role. Are you attempting to emulate Harrison Ford? To mimic his iconic performance? I doubt anyone could measure up to that standard. And if not, then what is your plan? To tread a different path? However, attempting something unique might only lead to an imitation of the original, rather than a fresh interpretation.

Later on, unexpectedly, I received a message from director Tom Keegan I hadn’t collaborated with before, who said, “Hi, I think you’d be perfect for this part.” To which I responded, “Alright, just one query – is Harrison Ford being considered for the role?

He replied, ‘I need Harrison Ford from 1981.’ To which I responded, ‘Excellent! I’ll present you with two names. One of these individuals will help you resolve your issue.’

“And Tom Keegan said, ‘OK, thank you for that. I like you for this role.’

“I proposed, ‘Why don’t I record myself? If you find it satisfactory, pass it along. However, if you think it’s not up to the mark, kindly let’s keep this confidential between us.’

He appreciated my work, and it seems even MachineGames and everyone at Bethesda felt the same way. That’s what landed me on this exciting journey.

Was it the case that Baker had previously imitated Harrison Ford’s voice? To put it more plainly, he did not. And to clarify further, I don’t typically find myself at home wondering aloud about how I might sound like Harrison Ford.

For me, the unique aspect might have been that it was my initial cinema experience – a movie I watched when I was just five, which was far too early an age to be watching it.

For the very first time, I encountered a superhero who eschewed the traditional cape and relied more on intellect than brawn. This revelation sparked within me the insight that even an ordinary individual, passionate about history, could embark on extraordinary journeys.

40 years ago, I wouldn’t have imagined myself performing on stage alongside such a remarkable ensemble, supported by an exceptional team, narrating an extraordinary tale – that of Indiana Jones.

During the comprehensive discussion, Baker also shares insights on his preferred Indiana Jones movie, his methodology in portraying the character, and the uncanny sensation (being the initial Joel actor) when The Last of Us was brought to life as a television series last year. Check it out!
