As a seasoned film enthusiast who has witnessed countless documentaries and true-crime dramas, I must admit that the case of JonBenét Ramsey has always held a peculiar fascination for me. Having lived through the ’90s and witnessing this national obsession unfold in real time, I can vividly recall the media frenzy and public speculation surrounding the tragic death of the young beauty queen.
In a fresh Netflix documentary, they’re taking another look at the JonBenét Ramsey case, focusing on the alleged mismanagement of the investigation by both law enforcement and the media.
The murder of JonBenét Ramsey still hasn’t been solved, as she was discovered deceased in the basement of her house back in December 1996.
The Netflix documentary summary explains that the Boulder, Colorado police, with limited expertise in homicide investigations, swiftly pointed fingers at JonBenét’s family as the prime suspects. This intensified media speculation and biased reporting, transforming the case into a nationwide fascination.
According to director Joe Berlinger, who worked on Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, he maintains a strong conviction that the murder of JonBenét can be unraveled and feels confident in declaring the Ramsey family’s innocence (as reported by New York Post).
The three-part series features interviews from journalists, former detectives on the case and JonBenét’s father, John. However, many will notice that JonBenét’s mother Patsy is only featured through old interviews.
Continue reading to learn about Patsy Ramsey, her life, and the events that transpired after the demise of her daughter.
Who was Patsy Ramsey?
Patsy Ramsey was the mother JonBenét Ramsey.
Hailing from West Virginia, Patsy completed her education in journalism at a local university in 1978. Concurrently, she had the distinction of being crowned Miss West Virginia in 1977 while pursuing her studies.
At the age of 23, Patsy tied the knot with John Ramsey. They went on to have a family of four: Burke was born in 1987, followed by JonBenet three years after that.
Back in 1991, I found myself settling down in the beautiful town of Boulder, Colorado. It was here that my passion for nurturing young talents led me to enroll my daughter, JonBenét, in children’s beauty pageants. Over time, her charm and grace earned her several titles in these competitions.
What happened to Patsy Ramsey?
In the documentary, it’s mentioned that Patsy received a stage 4 ovarian cancer diagnosis. Remarkably, she overcame this illness and went into remission for nine years, until the year 2002.
Sadly, Patsy died from ovarian cancer in 2006 at 49 years old.
After her passing, her attorney L Lin Wood stated on MSNBC: “She was an extraordinary individual who possessed a remarkable ability to look ahead in life. I believe she managed the tragedy in a manner that most of us struggle to comprehend, and few could mimic her resilience in handling such a difficult situation.
