As a film enthusiast with over three decades of viewing experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming Doctor Who: Joy to the World is not to be missed. Having followed the show since its 2005 revival, I’ve grown accustomed to the annual Christmas specials, and their absence during the New Year’s outings was a void hard to fill.
Add Doctor Who: Joy to the World to your watchlist
Between 2005 and 2017, the television series Doctor Who, under the guidance of Russell T Davies followed by Steven Moffat, aired an annual Christmas special. For some time afterward, it tried out New Year’s episodes. However, upon Davies returning in 2023, he declared that he broke through a barrier and demanded traditional Christmas stories. As he puts it now, ahead of the second festive journey for the current Doctor Ncuti Gatwa, “Doctor Who” has a very festive feel to it. It embodies a sense of family, fun, and offers both comedy and drama.
Moffat concurs, stating emphatically that it indeed feels very festive. He was requested by Davies to pen this year’s special. For a child, Doctor Who occupies a spot as magical as Santa Claus. You see, he may seem grumpy towards adults, but his fondness for children is undeniable. In many ways, the Doctor and Santa have always been kindred spirits.
To date, Davies has penned six “Doctor Who” Christmas specials; when you add this latest episode, Moffat’s total reaches nine. Yet, his ambition in writing festive scripts remains undiminished. As Moffat announces, “This year, the Doctor will reveal the answer to that question you’ve pondered since you were a child.” He claims to unravel the longest-standing enigma not just in the “Doctor Who” realm, but across the entire universe. Tune in on Christmas Day!
Doctor Who occupies the same space in a child’s mind as Santa Claus
As a cinephile, I can’t help but express my fascination with the enigma that still lingers in this captivating episode named “Joy to the World”. It seems our beloved Doctor will embark on an extraordinary journey this time, one that transports him to Everest Base Camp in the 1950s, aboard the Orient Express, amidst the tumult of World War II, into the future year 4202, and even further back in history. As always, he won’t be exploring these realms alone. The adventure awaits!
As Millie Gibson’s character Ruby Sunday bid farewell earlier this year, it’s now “Bridgerton” actor and fellow “Barbie” co-star Nicola Coughlan who graces our screens this festive season as the titular Joy. A new regular cast member is set to join us come next year.

In the exclusive sneak peek image (located above), we find the pair ensconced within a shabby bed-and-breakfast, facing a foreboding suitcase attached to Joy’s wrist – the exact item the Doctor has been pursuing throughout history. As Moffat chuckles, he recounts, “I thought to myself, if it’s set in a hotel, then the villain must be luggage!
