Dragon Ball Returns with Goku at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with Salute to the Fans

As a gamer and a lifelong anime enthusiast, I can’t help but feel the nostalgic rush that comes with seeing Goku gracing the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade once again! It’s like a warm, energy blast of pure Saiyan power right in my living room.

The Thanksgiving holiday is nearly here, and as it arrives, so does the Holiday Season, accompanied by popular culture’s timeless figures, thanks to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This traditional spectacle presents a unique spectacle of which characters will be graced with enormous floats for New York City residents to behold. Among these, none other than Son Goku from Dragon Ball can be seen giving a friendly two-finger salute to the crowd. This thoughtful addition to the long-standing event follows the sad news of Akira Toriyama’s passing earlier in 2024.

Each year, I find myself looking forward to Goku’s appearance at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and this time was no exception, even though he wasn’t in his Super Saiyan Blue form. Instead, he donned his traditional gi with the kanji for Goku emblazoned on it. With “Dragon Ball Super” generating a lot of buzz among fans as it delves into Goku’s adventures post-transformation back to a child, this felt like a delightful throwback to the Namek and Frieza Sagas. As the cameras rolled, the talented animators at Toei Animation seized the opportunity to give us a sneak peek of their stunning new float before the parade kicked off.

Dragon Ball Joins One Piece Among Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Floats

At this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, not just Son Goku is making an appearance as a Shonen Jump hero; Luffy will also be present following the unfortunate deflation incident at the 2023 event. As reported by Anime News Network, this time around, there was no repeat of that mishap, but rather a heartfelt salute to both series. This means Goku and Luffy join an esteemed group of characters cherished in North America and across the globe, including Disney’s fairytale princesses and beloved Australian character Bluey.

After the successful releases of Kung Fu Panda, Wednesday, and now Goku making an appearance, anime enthusiasts are delighted to see him continue the trend. The casual two-finger salute is a lively and cheerful way for Goku to greet crowds, reflecting his energetic personality. Furthermore, since he isn’t transformed yet, journalists find it less confusing when they don’t have to mispronounce Super Saiyan. With new episodes of Dragon Ball Daima and Dragon Ball Super on the horizon, as well as Goku being part of a Thanksgiving Day tradition, it promises to be an exciting year for Dragon Ball fans.

Goku’s Return Is Part of an Annual Tradition

Since making his debut in 2018 at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Goku has been a regular attendee with only one exception due to the pandemic in 2020. Given his global popularity, it was an effortless choice and effective marketing move for Toei Animation regarding their film “Dragon Ball Super: Broly”. It’s only appropriate that Goku became the first anime character to take part in this tradition, symbolizing one of the most successful manga series ever sold and a timeless icon in the world of anime.
