2025 offered some fantastic television, and while many new shows received a lot of buzz, these seven deserve more attention. If you’ve already seen the award-winners and are looking for something fresh, these seven hidden gems are worth checking out.
In 2025, several hit TV shows returned with new seasons, including favorites like Severance, Stranger Things, The Bear, The Righteous Gemstones, and Hacks. Alongside these established series, new shows like The Pitt, Pluribus, and Adolescence also gained popularity, earning both critical praise and lots of attention on social media. While these newer shows received positive reviews, they didn’t quite reach the same widespread recognition as the returning hits, meaning some viewers may have missed them.
7. Duster

Duster, a new crime thriller on HBO Max, came from the creator of shows like Shameless (LaToya Morgan) and J.J. Abrams. The show features Josh Holloway as a skilled getaway driver who partners with FBI agent Rachel Hilson to stop a powerful criminal leader.
As a total film and TV fanatic, I was really excited about Duster – the critics loved it, giving it a solid 92
6. Murderbot

This year, Apple TV+ released the sci-fi action comedy series Murderbot, created by Paul and Chris Weitz. The show, based on Martha Wells’ The Murderbot Diaries books, features Alexander Skarsgård as the main character – an android who realizes he’s independent and tries to keep it a secret.
Before its release, the Murderbot show received some online discussion, but it wasn’t all good. A few book fans were disappointed by the choice to use actor Bill Skarsgård’s face instead of a more typical robotic appearance. Unfortunately, that was the extent of the show’s social media buzz, which is a shame because it’s a really great show – it currently has a 95
5. Alien: Earth

When popular movie series are adapted for television, they often generate excitement, but Noah Hawley’s Alien series didn’t seem to last. Alien: Earth expands on the world created by Ridley Scott’s original films, notably taking the story to Earth and showcasing the different types of artificial life that have evolved in the future.
The new series Alien: Earth started strong, attracting 9.6 million viewers in its first six days, according to Variety. However, interest waned quickly, and by the first weekend of September – several weeks before the final episode – The Hollywood Reporter noted it was only the ninth most popular original series. Despite the drop in viewers, the show received positive reviews, earning a 94
4. Dope Thief
I’m really excited about this new Apple TV+ series coming in 2025, called Dope Thief. It’s created by Peter Craig and stars Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura, two actors I really admire. The basic story is about two friends who try to pull off a heist by pretending to be DEA agents, but they accidentally rob the wrong people – a major drug operation that the actual DEA is watching closely. Sounds like a recipe for a lot of trouble, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds!
Despite receiving positive reviews, the Apple TV+ show Dope Thief hasn’t really broken through into popular culture. It’s not often discussed online, and although it’s been nominated for awards, it hasn’t won any. This is unfortunate, considering its strong critical reception – it currently holds an 87
3. Dying For Sex

Kim Rosenstock and Elizabeth Meriwether turned the popular podcast into a highly praised FX miniseries, set to premiere in 2025. The show stars Michelle Williams as Molly Kochan and is based on the true story of Kochan’s journey to explore her sexuality after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis, following her decision to leave her husband.
With a remarkable 98
2. The Lowdown

Created by Sterlin Harjo, who also co-created Reservation Dogs, The Lowdown exists in the same fictional world as that acclaimed series. The show centers around Lee Raybon, a Tulsa, Oklahoma journalist played by Ethan Hawke, and his relentless pursuit of the truth.
Despite boasting a fantastic cast including Ethan Hawke, Keith David, Tim Blake Nelson, Peter Dinklage, and Tisha Campbell, The Lowdown’s popularity is surprisingly high. With a 98
1. Common Side Effects

Joe Bennett, the creator of Scavengers Reign, and Steve Hely collaborated on Common Side Effects, a truly original adult animated series coming in 2025. The show follows Frances Applewhite, a pharmaceutical company executive, and Marshall Cuso, a fungi expert, who reconnect after years apart. Marshall has discovered a mushroom with the potential to cure any illness.
With its striking animation, quirky humor, and gripping storyline, Common Side Effects stands out from other adult animated shows. Since debuting on Adult Swim, the series has received high praise, currently boasting a 100
