As a film enthusiast with a penchant for the darker side of storytelling, I must confess that Speak No Evil has left quite an indelible mark on my cinematic memory. Having had the privilege to traverse through various international film scenes, I can attest that this Danish-Dutch thriller stands out as a remarkable piece in contemporary cinema.
Now that the 2024 Hollywood remake of Speak No Evil has been released, it’s a good opportunity to revisit the original 2022 film which became available on DVD recently. In this movie, a Danish family visits a Dutch family they met during a vacation, expecting a peaceful weekend. However, things begin to take a turn as the Danes attempt to maintain politeness in the face of growing unpleasantness. Remarkably, despite the differences in nationality, most of the film is in English, making it convenient for those who are reluctant to read subtitles.
Watching the two films sequentially for 90 minutes each is definitely worth your time, as while they share the same narrative, they offer distinct differences. Some might argue that the remake directed by James Watkins excels in the first two acts, building tension effectively with James McAvoy delivering a captivating performance that seamlessly blends charm and menace. Additionally, Watkins’ script is more intricate, offering a richer backstory and a more definitive explanation of the enigmatic actions of the seemingly amiable couple.
Instead, Hollywood often lacks the boldness to preserve writer-director Christian Tafdrup’s original movie endings. And oh, what an ending it was! It was exceptionally somber and lingered with you for days, aligning more closely with the psychology of friendly couples and bearing a strong resemblance to Michael Haneke’s ‘Funny Games’.
1988’s “The Vanishing” was another gripping thriller, known for its grim finale that left such a lasting impression. Its director, George Sluzier, attempted to recreate his work in Hollywood, but unfortunately, he altered the ending, leading to a disappointing remake. On the other hand, the remake of “Speak No Evil” avoided this mistake, yet its alternative conclusion doesn’t compare to the original’s impact.
