As someone who has been captivated by the world of comic books since I was a kid, flipping through the pages of Marvel and DC comics with sheer wonder and excitement, I am genuinely thrilled about the upcoming release of “Kraven the Hunter”. Director J.C. Chandor’s approach to this film is refreshing, focusing on character development rather than universe building, which I believe will resonate with audiences.
The movie titled “Kraven the Hunter” is set to hit theaters later this month. While Kraven, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, is connected to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), this film is also being marketed as a standalone production. This unique aspect of the film is something that director J.C. Chandor is keen on highlighting. He aims to create a realistic atmosphere within the comic book movie world, placing greater emphasis on compelling storytelling rather than expanding the universe. In an interview with ComicBook, Chandor discussed the challenges of maintaining a balance between building the larger SSU and pursuing his own gritty, R-rated vision for “Kraven”.
Following Sony’s decision to loan Spider-Man, portrayed by Tom Holland, to Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, the company has been seeking profits from a universe centered around Spider-Man’s villains. Remarkably, the initial Venom film was highly successful, earning over $850 million at international box offices. However, Sony has struggled to replicate this success, with Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Venom: The Last Dance generating profits, though less than the original, while Morbius and Madame Web underperformed significantly, with Morbius facing two consecutive flops.
The assignment given to Chandor by Sony is no small feat – he must construct a blockbuster movie that appeals to audiences, while seamlessly integrating it into the broader Sony Spider-Man Universe and introducing lesser-known comic book characters like Kraven and the Chameleon. This task was not lost on Chandor during the production of Kraven the Hunter, as he recognized the challenges involved.
In his conversation with ComicBook, Chandor explained that he had enough character development at his disposal, provided by his collaborators. However, in certain instances, he crafted new variations of those characters. On-screen for the first time, these characters interacted with others, harmoniously blending into our narrative. The challenge was gradually unveiling the mysterious ‘The Chameleon’ character throughout the movie, so that by the end, viewers would exclaim, “Oh, my God, I understand who that person is.” His task was to accomplish all of this while progressing the plot of the series and concluding with a finale that leaves audiences eager for more.
J.C. Chandor Put Character Ahead of World-building in Kraven The Hunter
In dealing with the challenges of penning a fresh chapter for the SSU, Chandor chose to retreat and focus on the narrative central to Sergei Kravinoff’s early life and the turbulent family saga, as the son of Russian crime lord Nikolai Kravinoff (portrayed by Russell Crowe). Consequently, rather than making decisions for the franchise, the director constructed his rendition of Kraven The Hunter, ensuring that viewers could appreciate it regardless of their familiarity with other SSU ventures.
“I don’t want to give away too many plot points, but the way that our film is structured, the rest of those worlds don’t really matter,” Chandor said. “If I told this version of this story really freaking well and aimed for quality of storytelling and then with Aaron [Taylor-Johnson] and our action team and the things we’ve come up with, I think people are going to be really excited about that… But my goal was to kind of isolate our movie, protect it and just tell, you know, a good damn story.”
In the end, having an Earth-bound narrative was instrumental in helping Chandor meet his objectives. While the director appreciates Marvel’s space-themed stories, he prefers Spider-Man to stay grounded on the streets. This is the kind of project “Kraven the Hunter” represents.
Chandor described the story as being firmly rooted… My preferred narratives within the Spider-Man universe are those set at street level,” he said. “While there are certainly tales that ventured into space and other realms, ours does not. It’s very much grounded in our reality.
Kraven the Hunter will premiere exclusively in theaters on December 13th, 2024.
