2026 promises to be a huge year for video games, with highly anticipated titles like Resident Evil Requiem, Fable, Marvel’s Wolverine, and Grand Theft Auto VI currently scheduled for release. Beyond new games, 2026 will also see several beloved classics reimagined with remakes.
Over the last ten years, it’s become increasingly common for video game companies to revisit their classic titles with remakes. Some remakes don’t live up to the originals, but others significantly enhance the gameplay and introduce beloved games to a new audience. Here are five exciting video game remakes scheduled for release in 2026 that are worth watching.
1) Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly

Horror games are being remade more than any other type of game lately. It started with Capcom’s successful remake of Resident Evil 2, which inspired Konami to remake Silent Hill 2. Now, Koei Tecmo is joining the trend with a remake of their classic game, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly.
Launching in March 2026, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is the first completely rebuilt game in the series since 2014. This remake will update almost everything from the original – including the graphics and sound – while keeping the core gameplay experience intact. Based on what’s been shown, the remake looks very good and could lead to more new Fatal Frame games in the future.
2) Dragon Quest VII Reimagined

Square Enix has been actively updating the classic Dragon Quest games with remakes. While the first three titles – Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest 2, and Dragon Quest 3 – were revamped with a beautiful HD-2D style, they’re taking a different approach with Dragon Quest VII. Instead of the original’s pixelated graphics, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined features a stunning, Pixar-inspired art style with environments designed like detailed dioramas. This gives the game a fresh, unique look while still preserving the beloved charm of the original.
This new version of Dragon Quest VII, called Reimagined, isn’t the first remake. A remake was previously released for the 3DS in 2013 and has been considered the best way to experience the game for the past ten years. However, with new gameplay and story enhancements, Reimagined is expected to become the most popular version of this classic Dragon Quest title.
3) Halo: Campaign Evolved

Instead of making a brand new Halo game, Xbox and Halo Studios are reimagining the original Halo: Combat Evolved. This remake is being built in Unreal Engine 5, which will be the engine for all future main Halo games. Notably, Halo: Combat Evolved will also be available on PlayStation consoles for the first time, breaking the series’ long-standing exclusivity to Xbox.
Rumors indicate that the recent remake of Halo: Combat Evolved is just the beginning, with plans to remake Halo 2 and Halo 3 next. How well the Combat Evolved remake performs will likely influence future decisions, but this project seems intended to refresh the Halo franchise. Even though it doesn’t include multiplayer, developers hope the remake will satisfy dedicated fans.
4) Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake

Ubisoft first announced a remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in 2020, but it’s faced numerous delays. These weren’t due to a lack of effort, but because Ubisoft wasn’t satisfied with the game’s quality. The project has since been restarted with a fresh approach and has been under development since then.
Good news for fans who thought it might never happen: the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is finally coming out! Ubisoft has announced a release date in early 2026, and some reports suggest it could even be available as early as January 2026. If so, we won’t have to wait long to experience this updated version of the classic game.
5) Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis

Announced recently, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis could be one of the biggest game releases of the year. This new version of the original Tomb Raider from 1996 is timed to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary and Lara Croft’s first adventure. Although we haven’t seen much gameplay yet, the initial trailer shown at The Game Awards last month looked very impressive.
The upcoming Legacy of Atlantis is particularly important for the future of Tomb Raider. It will directly lead into the next major game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, planned for release in 2027. Catalyst will continue the story with the reimagined version of Lara Croft that the developers at Crystal Dynamics are using for future games. If you’re new to the series and curious about Tomb Raider, Legacy of Atlantis is designed to be the perfect place to start.
