Okami Sequel “Still a Ways Off,” As Clovers CEO Promises “An Experience That Surpasses Expectations”

Okay, so Capcom’s got a ton of games coming out in 2026 – Resident Evil Requiem, the new Onimusha, and Pragmata – which is awesome. But honestly, I’m even more hyped about the fact that they’re working on a new Okami! The president of Clover, Kento Koyama, just said in a New Year’s message that it’s still a good ways off though, so we’re probably going to be waiting a while to play it. Still, a new Okami is worth the wait, right?

Despite the delay, the development team is actively working on the next game. They’re excited to share it with players, even though it will take some time. They promise to keep working hard throughout the year to create a game that exceeds everyone’s expectations.

Hideki Kamiya, the studio head and lead designer, explained that the team has been working incredibly hard on the game, so much so that time has flown by. He reassured fans that this intense effort means good progress is being made.

He described how Clovers had expanded rapidly two years prior, going from a small team working in a single, crowded office to a fully established studio with locations in both Tokyo and Osaka.

Kamiya explained that Clovers has brought together a talented and dedicated team who all share the same vision. Despite the usual fast pace and energy, they’re enjoying a lot of creativity and fun. The entire team is focused on one goal: bringing joy to players. That’s their core mission, and it will stay that way for years to come.

I’m so excited for another year of fun with my friends! We always get up to something, and I can’t wait to see what kind of crazy adventures we have together.

Okay, so at The Game Awards 2024, they finally showed off the sequel to Okami! The trailer was short, but it confirmed we’re getting to play as Amaterasu again, which is awesome. Honestly, we don’t know much about the story yet – it seems like it’s picking up where the first game left off – or how the gameplay will be different. But here’s the cool part: Capcom’s Yoshiaki Hirabayashi said they’re building it on the RE Engine. He basically said that without it, they wouldn’t be able to bring director Hideki Kamiya’s vision for the game to life. That engine is seriously powerful!

Originally released for PlayStation 2 in 2006 and Nintendo Wii in 2008, Okami was later remastered in HD for several other consoles, including PlayStation 3, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. While the game didn’t sell well initially – even contributing to the closure of its developer, Clover Studio – it was highly praised by critics. A sequel of sorts, Ōkamiden, followed in 2010, but was only available on the Nintendo DS.
