My Hero Academia Almost Killed Off Its Top Hero Before the End

As a dedicated fan of “My Hero Academia“, I must say that the revelation about Endeavor’s original fate left me both astonished and intrigued. It’s fascinating to think about how different our beloved characters could have been if not for the masterful storytelling of Kōhei Horikoshi. The idea of Endeavor, a character who underwent such a profound transformation, dying early in the series is almost hard to comprehend.

Although My Hero Academia bid farewell this past summer, enthusiasts continue to uncover fresh insights about the show. To honor its conclusion, Shonen Jump released a detailed video featuring the top 100 characters as chosen by fans. The video was presented by voice actors Yamashita (Izuku Midoriya) and Nobuhiko Okamoto (Katsuki Bakugo), with Neki Matsuzawa serving as the emcee. Throughout the video, they provided commentary and disclosed information from manga author Kōhei Horikoshi.

The experts disclosed the replies they received from Horikoshi, who discussed various topics about the series. One of these topics was when Horikoshi was asked which character didn’t turn out as he initially envisioned. Interestingly, Horikoshi revealed that he had originally intended for Enji Todoroki, or Endeavor, to perish. This unexpected twist caught Yamashita and Okamoto off guard, as Horikoshi shared during his response.

Top Hero Endeavor Was Meant To Die in My Hero Academia

In an interesting twist, Horikoshi disclosed that Endeavor’s character development diverged from his initial expectations. Originally, he envisioned Endeavor’s end to be untimely. However, he doesn’t delve into the specifics of his original plan for Endeavor. Instead, Endeavor surpassed all of Horikoshi’s initial imaginings and grew into a character far greater than he had anticipated.

What Happened to Endeavor Instead?

In the anime “My Hero Academia”, Endeavor undergoes a significant transformation in character. Initially portrayed as Shoto Todoroki’s arrogant and stern father, it becomes clear that Endeavor values perfection above all else, pushing his children to become ideal heroes. He is also fixated on surpassing All-Might to claim the top spot on Japan’s Hero Billboard Charts. Compared to other characters, including actual villains, Endeavor initially appears to be the most cruel for his treatment of his own offspring.

In the anime “My Hero Academia”, the character underwent a transformation known as redemption arc. Following All-Might’s retirement, Endeavor rose to the position of Japan’s top hero. He recognized his duties and started making restitution for his previous wrongdoings. However, his past cruelty towards his children would resurface as a problem when it was disclosed that Dabi, a major villain, was actually his son in disguise.

In the Final War arc, Endeavor manages to pull through despite receiving severe wounds. Later on, he chooses a tranquil retirement and spends his remaining days attempting to atone for past misdeeds. The series emphasizes his eventual redemption as a key theme, earning him widespread admiration from fans who view him as a heroic figure. Endeavor ranked sixth in the Character Poll, demonstrating the transformation in fans’ perceptions of this character.

Although Horikoshi doesn’t explicitly detail Endeavor’s demise, it seems plausible that the author didn’t envision a profound and lasting redemption arc for this character. The way Endeavor is depicted at the outset of the series likely reflects how Horikoshi planned to portray him throughout the manga.

In the latest Top 100 Character Ranking video by Shonen Jump, they unveiled plans for a “Final Fan Book.” This book will provide additional insights from Horikoshi, address fan queries, and present the outcomes of the last four Super Poll events. Additionally, an art exhibition marking the conclusion of My Hero Academia manga is set to take place at the Creative Tokyo Museum in Kyobash, Tokyo, between June 21st and August 31st, 2025. Lastly, a special extra chapter confirming a well-loved relationship within My Hero Academia was also published recently.
