As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who grew up with the prequels as part of my formative years, I must say that “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” has managed to strike a chord with me in a way few other recent additions to the franchise have. The show’s nods to beloved moments from “The Phantom Menace,” such as the resurrection of the iconic “wizard” catchphrase, are delightful throwbacks that bring a smile to my face.
The latest Star Wars TV series, titled “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” has reignited the affection for the prequel trilogy among fans. This week, it premiered its first two episodes on Disney+, transporting viewers to a fresh part of the galaxy where a gang of children unwittingly embarks on a swashbuckling pirate journey. Unlike most other Star Wars shows and films, it stands apart (in a positive way), yet the series openly displays its admiration for previous Star Wars installments.
Fans of the Star Wars prequel trilogy might have spotted a clear nod to “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” in the debut episode of “Skeleton Crew“, since it borrowed one of the film’s silliest (but now iconic) lines. Twenty-five years following the premiere of “The Phantom Menace“, this new series revived the “wizard” phrase, which originally came from a conversation between young Tatooine residents and became notorious due to its origin.
When Anakin exhibits his podracer to a friend before the Boonta Eve race, his buddy reacts by saying, “This is really cool, Ani.” This attempt at creating Star Wars kid slang in 1999 was met with sighs of disapproval, but it has since grown endearing to fans who grew up watching The Phantom Menace.
At the debut of “Skeleton Crew,” I found myself in awe when Wim used the term “totally wizard” to describe Fern’s hoverbike. This lingo, reminiscent of the streets of Tatooine, clearly shows that its influence has traveled far and wide across the galaxy. As a movie enthusiast, it was fascinating to witness this cultural connection unfold on screen.
Skeleton Crew Calls Back to Holiday Special
In Skeleton Crew, there isn’t just one nod to a disputed Star Wars movie – there’s also a reappearance of the controversial hologram circus program that originated in the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special.
Jon Watts, one of the creators and directors, expressed his fondness for a specific part of the show to EW, stating, “It’s definitely one of my favorites.” He added, “I’m glad it’s in the first episode because it allows us to address it early on. I’ve always found that strange circus hologram intriguing.
In the sequel, Skeleton Crew, it was verified that the circus scene wasn’t identical to the one in the Holiday Special, but instead, it was a reenactment created by the production team.
Watts explained that we managed to re-create it. Our initial plan was to obtain the original footage, but unfortunately, it’s of poor quality as it was a TV special, with low resolution.
Co-creator Christopher Ford pointed out that it was restrictive since only one angle could be utilized,” he said. “What we actually required was a variety of perspectives for shooting.
