Developing video games now takes much longer than it used to. As technology improves and players expect more, games become bigger, more complicated, and visually stunning. This means fans often have to wait years between announcements and the actual release. This is particularly frustrating for fans of smaller, dedicated role-playing games, which aren’t always backed by large companies or huge budgets—they’re often created by teams who are truly passionate about their work. In this case, the wait for the next installment in this popular series is nearing ten years.
Originally announced in 2016, Two Worlds III remains one of the longest-running RPGs still in development, with very little new information released after a decade. Fans are increasingly curious about the game’s status and whether it will ever come out. As other highly anticipated RPGs like The Elder Scrolls VI and the Gothic Remake approach release, it’s becoming questionable if Two Worlds III can still make a significant impact.
Two Worlds III Is A Decade In The Making

The Two Worlds games have always been a bit different from other RPGs. While often compared to The Elder Scrolls, they weren’t known for being polished or refined. The combat felt awkward, the animations were clunky, and the games had their share of technical problems. Despite all that, many players – including me – found something special in them. They offered incredible freedom, a huge world to explore, and a unique willingness to let the game’s systems interact in unexpected and often fascinating ways. They provided a different kind of RPG experience than Bethesda’s popular titles.
The first Two Worlds game came out in 2007, and Two Worlds II followed in 2010. Both games were open-world RPGs, similar to those made by Bethesda, but they were made with smaller budgets and tried out some new ideas. While the influence of games like Oblivion and Skyrim was clear, it also helped Two Worlds stand out. Players who enjoyed the open freedom of those games and didn’t mind a few imperfections could find a lot to like.
I was so excited when Two Worlds III was first announced back in 2016! It wasn’t just going to be another sequel, they said – it was going to be a complete overhaul of the series with amazing graphics, improved gameplay, and a really seamless open world. But things quickly started to go wrong. The developers ran into trouble with delays, had to reorganize the studio, and struggled financially. There were times when it really seemed like the game might never come out, especially when they started looking for a new company to help finish it. And honestly, almost ten years later, Two Worlds III is still nowhere in sight, and things aren’t looking good at all.
Will The Wait Be Worth It?

The big question is whether Two Worlds III was worth the lengthy development process. Long delays can easily result in a game feeling old-fashioned or failing to deliver on its promises. A lot has changed in the RPG world since Two Worlds III was first announced in 2016. Players now expect things like fluid combat, compelling stories, and worlds that truly respond to their actions. Considering how much has evolved, it might have been better to start the game over from scratch.
The Two Worlds games have always been about more than just how they look. They’ve gained a dedicated fanbase because they encourage players to be creative, try different things, and even find ways to ‘break’ the game. The series lets you experiment, take advantage of its systems, and solve problems in unique ways. If Two Worlds III can keep that same spirit of freedom while fixing technical issues, it could still appeal to players, even if it doesn’t feel brand new.
Another important factor is the game’s scope. If the developers avoid trying to compete with huge, blockbuster games and instead create a more streamlined and adaptable RPG experience, the long wait might feel more reasonable. Fans who have been following the project for years aren’t looking for a flawless game, but one that feels genuine and offers real depth. The success of Two Worlds III will depend on whether it can update its core mechanics while still keeping the quirky, endearing charm of the previous games. If it manages that balance, I think the RPG will be worth the wait.
Two Worlds III Could Soften The Long Wait For Elder Scrolls 6

Role-playing game fans have been eagerly awaiting The Elder Scrolls VI for a long time. Its delay has created a significant opportunity for other games in the genre to step up. While many great RPGs exist, few offer the same level of open-world freedom and exploration that Bethesda is known for. Two Worlds III is well-positioned to capitalize on this and potentially become a major success.
The Two Worlds games have always felt like spiritual siblings to The Elder Scrolls, offering a similar open-world fantasy experience, though a bit more unpolished. Some players actually enjoyed this roughness – the glitches and quirks often led to surprising and memorable moments. While some dismissed them as imitations, many of us eagerly anticipated each new release.
If Two Worlds III is released before The Elder Scrolls VI, it could satisfy players who are eager for a similar RPG experience. Even if it’s only moderately successful, it could renew interest in the Two Worlds series and justify the years spent developing it. However, ten years is a long wait for any game. No matter how Two Worlds III performs, its development continues to give fans hope. For now, fans are waiting to see if a publisher will step forward and the game will actually be released.
