As a seasoned gamer and DC Universe enthusiast with decades of comics, movies, and shows under my belt, let me tell you, the latest addition to James Gunn’s revamped cinematic universe – Creature Commandos – has been nothing short of a timeline treasure trove!
Within just two episodes, the series ‘Creature Commandos’ has provided numerous answers about the DC Universe – even clarifying what is considered canon for James Gunn’s reimagined cinematic universe. Moreover, the initial episode itself offers enough details to pinpoint precisely when ‘Creature Commandos’ falls in the DC Universe timeline.
In the scene, Waller (voiced by Viola Davis) introduces the monster team to Rick Flag Sr. (voiced by Frank Grillo). She explains that Project Starfish was the operation they were sent on in Corto Maltese to get vital military secrets, a location known from Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Waller also shares that since her daughter revealed her black ops to the media in the finale of Peacemaker Season 1, intelligence agency ARGUS is keeping a close eye on her actions to ensure she doesn’t endanger any more human prisoners. Leota (Danielle Brooks) made this choice in season 1 by siding with her team instead of following her mother’s schemes.
In a brief, casual manner, the animated series Creature Commandos verifies that the key occurrences depicted in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker are still valid within the DCU. This provides us with hints to help construct the new timeline. James Gunn, prior to the launch of The Suicide Squad, mentioned that the film unfolds in 2021, which is the same year it premiered. Following his recovery from the hospital, the events in Peacemaker commence approximately five months later. Therefore, it’s reasonable to assume that the first season of Peacemaker takes place around 2022. The final missing piece comes from Creature Commandos.
Rick Flag confides in Princess Illana (portrayed by Maria Bakalova) that his son, Rick Flag Jr., played by Joel Kinnaman, passed away approximately two years before the commencement of the animated series. Since Waller also notes that Flag Jr.’s demise occurred during the Corto Maltese operation, it’s likely that most – if not all – of Gunn’s previous DC adaptations are being reused in this universe. This implies that the Creature Commandos series is set – at the very least – in mid-2023 or early 2024 at the latest. This detail is crucial because it gives us a clue about how the timeline for shows like Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 will unfold.
Creature Commandos Reveals How Superman & Peacemaker S2 Fit Into the DCU Timeline
It’s been confirmed that the release dates for “Creature Commandos”, “Superman”, and “Peacemaker” Season 2 establish their chronological order within the DCU. This means that the events in “Superman” are at least two years, possibly more, after those of “The Suicide Squad”. This is intriguing because the leader of the Task Force X operation in Corto Maltese was Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, who had previously imprisoned for shooting Superman with a Kryptonite bullet. We knew that David Corenswet would portray an established Son of Krypton in “Superman”, but we didn’t know how long Superman had been active in the DCU before his solo movie. Thanks to “Creature Commandos”, we now understand that Superman must have at least three or four years of crime-fighting experience under his belt before his solo movie takes place.
Before Superman was marked by Bloodsport, he was already busy in Metropolis. As the movie reveals, Bloodsport had previously declined an offer to join Task Force X and spent several months in Belle Reve before joining The Suicide Squad. Adding another two years until the Creature Commandos and considering the time gap between the animated series and Superman, it’s reasonable to assume that Clark Kent first put on his cape around four years prior to the upcoming movie. This leaves plenty of room for tales about what transpired in Gunn’s DCU, not just for Superman, but also for the Justice League as a whole over these years.
The intrigue surrounding the timeline for “Peacemaker” Season 2 is amplified. Initial glimpses of Season 2 suggest that the Operation Butterfly team remains connected following their successful defense of Earth against an alien invasion, hinting at a continuation soon after Season 1. However, with fresh details about the “Creature Commandos,” it appears there’s a time leap of at least two years in the storyline.
After approximately six months following the events of “The Suicide Squad”, Operation Butterfly took place. Approximately two years later, the storyline for “Creature Commandos” unfolded during the Corto Maltese Operation. Since Season 2 of “Peacemaker” occurs after “Superman”, which itself takes place following “Creature Commandos”, there is a two-year gap between the stories told in Seasons 1 and 2 of “Peacemaker”. This time span is quite considerable!
Looking forward to discovering how Season 2 of Peacemaker fills in the two-year gap and reveals what its characters were up to during that period. It’s important for a coherent and unbroken narrative that the DCU doesn’t begin with a confusing or inconsistent timeline.
New episodes of Creature Commandos hit MAX every Thursday until January 9, 2025.
