As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has seen his fair share of Bond films and their evolving portrayal of women, I find myself intrigued by the ongoing debate about a female Bond. Gemma Arterton’s perspective, as an actress with a substantial body of work, carries weight in this discussion.
Actress Gemma Arterton has voiced her reservations regarding the prospect of a female taking on the role of Bond, expressing her belief that many might perceive it as too unconventional or unusual.
Earlier on, Barbara Broccoli, the producer of Bond, has consistently dismissed ideas about casting a female actor for the legendary spy character. According to her statement to Variety, the character may come from any racial background, but she identifies as male.
In 2021’s No Time to Die, Lashana Lynch portrayed a character who took over the “007” code name from James Bond following his retirement. However, her character wasn’t a feminine reinterpretation of Bond himself. Instead, she assumed the role and its responsibilities in a unique way.
As a film enthusiast, I’d rather craft fresh, dynamic female characters from scratch, rather than reinterpret established male roles for women to portray.
Despite this, the concept remains floated as a thought-provoking what-if scenario. Recently, Gemma Arterton, who has worked with the James Bond franchise in Quantum of Solace, was asked about it in an interview with The Times.
She expressed that although they discuss it, she believes it might be considered too extreme by others. On certain occasions, it’s important to uphold traditions.
As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but share my thoughts on the matter: Ever since my memorable roles in Funny Woman, Culprits, and The King’s Man, I’ve been frequently puzzled by a question that keeps coming up – why am I so often asked about Bond? You see, my screen time in the 2008 blockbuster was quite fleeting.
She commented: “I have no regrets about appearing in a Bond movie, yet I can’t help but wonder why it seems to always be associated with me, given that my role was just a brief five-minute appearance.
Previously, the actress has voiced unease about how females are often portrayed in James Bond movies, such as her character, Strawberry Fields, who gets easily charmed by the MI6 agent in Quantum of Solace.
Instead, she clarifies that the job served as a crucial stepping stone in her career path, before she had fully solidified her professional standing.
In 2020, she shared with The Sun: “During the early stages of my profession, I was as financially strapped as a penniless mouse, but I was content simply to have the opportunity to work and make ends meet.
Despite continued criticism for taking on the role of Quantum of Solace, I was only 21 at the time and faced with the burden of student loans. Plus, let’s not forget, it was a James Bond movie – an opportunity that doesn’t come along every day!
However, as I grew older, I came to see that there were numerous issues with the portrayal of Bond women. Strawberry could have simply refused, in all honesty, and opted for flats instead.
After the thrilling exit of Daniel Craig from the Bond franchise with No Time to Die, there’s now an empty seat within the ranks of Her Majesty’s Secret Service, as speculation swirls about who will fill it next.
