As a seasoned cinema devotee with a soft spot for mystery thrillers and a hearty appreciation for the shonen genre, I can confidently say that the trailer for Detective Conan’s 28th movie, One-Eyed Flashback, has me thoroughly intrigued. The darker turn the film seems to be taking is a refreshing twist, promising an engaging and captivating narrative that will keep fans on their toes.
In April 2025, the 28th installment of the Detective Conan series, titled “One-Eyed Flashback,” is set to release. A fresh trailer has been unveiled, revealing some exciting insights for fans. Interestingly, the sneak peek suggests that the film may be taking a more ominous direction than initially anticipated by many viewers. Although Detective Conan is a mystery thriller within the shonen genre, it appears this movie will delve deeper into darkness. Despite this unexpected twist, the preview looks visually striking, and Katsuya Shigehara, who previously directed “Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine,” will be leading as the main director for this upcoming film.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that “One-Eyed Flashback” features Shigehara in its cast, alongside Takeharu Sakurai – a esteemed colleague from our beloved “Conan” series. This captivating film is penned by Sakurai, inspired by the iconic characters crafted by Gosho Aoyama in his original manga. Here’s my take on the plot: “One-Eyed Flashback” follows Shinichi Kudo, a prodigious student detective and the son of a renowned mystery writer. With an uncanny ability to crack even the toughest criminal cases using his intellect and reasoning skills, Kudo has already made quite a name for himself in the world of crime-solving.
Detective Conan’s Legacy Can’t Be Understated
Gosho Aoyama’s “Detective Conan” or “Case Closed,” as it is also known, started serialization in “Weekly Shonen Sunday” back in January 1994 and remains ongoing today, boasting over 106 compiled volumes. The story revolves around Jimmy Kudo, a brilliant high school detective who lends his skills to the police department. In an attempt to silence him, a criminal organization named the Black Organization attacks him, administering a toxin that instead causes his body to shrink to the size of an elementary school student. To maintain his cover and continue his detective work, he adopts the alias Conan.
For many years, Detective Conan has managed to stay culturally significant both in Japan and globally. Its popularity isn’t limited to fans of anime and manga; it consistently ranks on Media Factory’s Da Vinci magazine’s “Book of the Year” listings. Beyond this, the series significantly impacted Japanese youth during the early 2000s. In fact, in 2006, the Japanese government employed Conan to educate young children about crime-related issues. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also utilized Conan and other characters from the show in their official materials to promote their activities. Aoyama’s work is further celebrated in his hometown of Houkei, Tottori, with several bronze statues depicting characters from the series and a museum that showcases some of his original works.
By 2023, Detective Conan had achieved the status of one of the world’s top-selling manga series, with more than a staggering 270 million copies sold. The most recent and 27th movie in the franchise, Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram, shattered box office records in Japan, earning an impressive 3.3 billion yen during its opening weekend. It’s evident that Conan still has a strong following, and fans are eager to see if One-Eyed Flashback can top the sales of the previous film.
