Doctor Who star Sylvester McCoy hints past Doctors will be returning again

As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the regeneration of more Doctors than I can count on one hand (and a few fingers), it is a sheer delight to see the timeless saga of Doctor Who continue to evolve and surprise us with each passing year. The 60th anniversary celebrations were nothing short of spectacular, offering fans not only a nostalgic trip down memory lane but also a tantalizing glimpse into the future.

Reflecting on the past year marking the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, it was a bountiful journey for us dedicated fans. Not only did we get to relish in three special episodes featuring the return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate, but Ncuti Gatwa’s incarnation of The Doctor graced our screens for the very first time. To top it all off, the series introduced a new spin-off titled Tales of the TARDIS, making this anniversary year an unforgettable adventure indeed!

The spin-off featured a reunion of characters from the original series’ golden age, such as Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy. They shared tales within the Memory TARDIS, which served as a prelude to revised versions of their past exploits.

In an interview with The 50% Doctor Who Podcast, McCoy proposed that the show wasn’t solely meant as a nostalgic trip down memory lane for the series, but also aimed to reacquaint viewers with the classic Doctors, potentially paving the way for their future appearance on the main program.

When asked if appearing in Jodie Whittaker’s final episode, “The Power of the Doctor,” symbolized wrapping up his tenure on the series, McCoy replied: “It’s not like closing a book; that implies an ending. It feels more like turning a page.

After that, we moved on to “Tales of the TARDIS”. Showrunner Russell T Davies aimed to refresh everyone’s memory about The Doctors, since they might return in the future. Consequently, he chose to do it so that in the event he needs them again, we would be easily recognized as we are now, not as we were before.

When queried about potential return to the series, McCoy replied: “That’s something for Russell to decide.

McCoy’s idea was actually hinted at by Davies himself in the past. In the 60th anniversary special “The Giggle,” the notion of dual Doctors, featuring David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor alongside Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth, was first proposed, instead of one replacing the other.

In the episode’s commentary, Davies expressed his view that “Each of the Doctors seemingly resurfaced with their unique TARDISes, which were gifts from the Toymaker. They’re all exploring different dimensions, and I like to refer to this as the ‘Doctor’s Universe.’

At this point, it’s unclear if what Davies suggested is part of the official storyline of the show, as it hasn’t been explicitly validated within the series itself.

However, if McCoy is correct, it certainly seems as though we could see it confirmed on screen one day, leading to some seriously timey-wimey, multi-Doctor shenanigans.
