As a longtime fan of superhero stories and someone who has watched Kevin Kline’s portrayal of Oliver Queen in “The Princess Bride” more times than I care to admit, I firmly believe that Kevin Kline would be an exceptional choice for the role of Green Arrow in a live-action adaptation.
The character Green Lantern didn’t fare well in its initial run at DC Comics, causing some difficulties when they attempted to rival Marvel Studios. Yet, all things change with time, and now, DC Studios plans to revisit the Green Lantern universe with a new series titled Lanterns. The head of DC Studios, James Gunn, has hinted that this upcoming show will have a more realistic feel and even playfully suggested that Ryan Reynolds, who portrayed Green Lantern before, might be part of it. Although Reynolds declined the offer, the prospect of another actor joining the new DC Universe is intriguing.
It’s widely appreciated that Ryan Reynolds is an exceptional actor, and the idea of him appearing in a DC film would undoubtedly bring joy to many fans. The DC Universe boasts a wealth of fascinating characters, and it’s not hard to imagine how well-suited Reynolds would be for several roles. Characters like Metamorpho come to mind as potential perfect fits for Reynolds, but there are other, equally renowned characters that he could undoubtedly excel in portraying.
Wild Dog Is Violent and Hilarious
Debuting in “Wild Dog” #1, Wild Dog made his appearance during a time when The Punisher was one of the most sought-after characters within comic books. Similar to The Punisher, Wild Dog is a character who isn’t shy about using guns, doesn’t hesitate to use lethal force, and sports a large emblem on his chest. Initially, he was a lesser-known vigilante and faded into obscurity following his miniseries, failing to achieve the popularity of his inspiration. Since then, Wild Dog has been wandering through the DC Universe, with his most intriguing portrayal occurring in the Young Animal book “Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye,” where he transformed into a brutish and foul-mouthed soldier partnered with Cave Carson.
In the latest compilation titled “Batman: The Brave and the Bold“, Wild Dog, originally from the Quad Cities, is depicted as a struggling vigilante. This contemporary portrayal of Wild Dog aligns perfectly with Reynolds’ forte, given his expertise in creating humorous yet intense characters. Indeed, Reynolds’ interpretation of Wild Dog could easily win over fans due to his skillful handling of such characters.
Ryan Reynolds Would Find the Heart and Humor in Cliff Steele
The Doom Patrol stand out among other superhero groups as they are uniquely peculiar, with each individual member carrying a personal tragedy that shapes their identity. In the live-action “Doom Patrol” series, we witnessed this unconventional team in all their eccentric brilliance, with Cliff Steele being vividly portrayed by Brendan Fraser. Despite having minimal physical form compared to his teammates, Steele has always been the emotional core of the Doom Patrol, embodying a sense of humanity that resonates deeply. Fraser’s performance skillfully captured both the humor and emotional depth of the character, a trait that Ryan Reynolds would also masterfully handle.
In essence, Steele shares many traits with Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool character; they both employ humor to mask their vulnerable sides, such as their yearning for affection, and are capable of extreme violence when necessary. Steele, being a member of the Doom Patrol, embodies the quintessential superhero figure, exhibiting a propensity for violence and chaos that Reynolds could bring to life brilliantly. Furthermore, it’s easy to imagine Reynold’s voice emanating from Steele’s robotic body in any Doom Patrol escapade.
Reynolds Would Make a Brilliant Mister Miracle
As a film enthusiast captivated by DC’s rich universe, I find myself particularly drawn to the intriguing pantheon known as The New Gods. These heroes have been waging an eternal war against the malevolent forces of Apokolips, led by the formidable Darkseid. Each New God has their unique flaws, but none more relatable than Mister Miracle.
Mister Miracle is the most human of the New Gods, which is perfect for Reynolds. Reynolds’s best characters are charming and funny, hiding their hurt under their bluster. That describes Miracle perfectly. His love of Barda is his most important characteristic, something that is reminiscent of Deadpool’s love of Vanessa. Sure, Miracle isn’t known for the same kind of profanity as Deadpool, but Reynolds has proven that he can still be funny without depending on cursing and gross-out humor. Reynolds’s Mister Miracle would be amazing.
Reynolds as Wally West Would Be a Riot
As a devoted fan, I’d like to express my admiration for Wally West, who made history as the first sidekick to graduate from being a supporting character to becoming a main hero. Known initially as Kid Flash, he worked alongside Barry Allen and the Teen Titans before deciding to retire. However, the tragic event of Allen’s demise in “Crisis on Infinite Earths” led West to assume his predecessor’s mantle.
As a film enthusiast, I’d argue that Ryan Reynolds could perfectly embody Wally West on screen, despite some skeptics claiming he might be too old. However, it’s important to remember that West is portrayed as a married father of two teenagers, making Reynolds’ age less of an issue. Furthermore, Reynolds brings real-life experience as a husband and father to the table, which aligns with West’s character development. In terms of acting skills, Reynolds can easily channel Wally West’s signature witty and humorous style without breaking a sweat.
Reynolds Would Make a Perfect Comic-Accurate Green Arrow
In the Arrowverse, Stephen Amell’s portrayal of Oliver Queen has shaped a character that fans perceive differently from his comic book counterpart. Unlike the Green Arrow in the comics, who is essentially the antithesis of Batman – a passionate liberal, vocal about his ideals, and unwavering in his pursuit of justice. He’s a complex individual, prone to mistakes while striving for righteousness. Witty and endearing as he may be, Green Arrow can also be brash and aloof.
Reynolds is perfect for a comic-accurate Green Arrow. He has the good looks, the sense of humor, and can play annoying as well as he can endearing. All of that is Green Arrow in a nutshell and Reynolds has just enough edge to make his Green Arrow dangerous. Green Arrow is also the easiest DC character to imagine with a foul mouth, something that Reynolds has proven to be quite adroit at. Oliver is also one of the older DC heroes, so Reynolds’s age isn’t a problem.
