As a seasoned cinephile who’s seen more superhero movies than I care to count, the latest James Gunn’s Superman trailer has me intrigued and excited. The idea of Superman coexisting with an array of DC Universe characters is not new, but the execution seems promising. If done right, this could be a game-changer for the DCU, offering a unique take on the Man of Steel that we haven’t seen before.
James Gunn’s Superman trailer has set the Internet on fire and like all big comic book movie releases, the opinions about this first teaser were far from unanimous. One of the biggest criticisms of Gunn’s take on Superman and his world was that that world was overpopulated with other characters from the DC Universe franchise. The Superman trailer gave us looks at Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, The Authority’s Engineer, and Metamorpho – each connected to other corners of the DCU that will be explored in future projects.
The initial concern from fans is that DC Studios is making a Marvel Studios-style mistake by trying to build out a shared universe at the expense of a focused character story. However, James Gunny has both said – and now demonstrated – that he’s taking a different approach. And, when you look at what Bunn is doing, there’s clear potential his Superman to be distinct from all previous movie versions of the character – precisely because he exists within a world of other superheroes.
What Is A Hero?
Audience members have grown accustomed to the concept of a Superman film delving into the idea of a deity-like figure coexisting with ordinary people, or a divine entity attempting to blend in with everyday life – these are central themes that resonate with diverse groups of people. What’s interesting is that no live-action Superman movie has delved into the aspect of Superman serving as an inspiration for other superheroes thus far.
In essence, Superman serves as the model that other superheroes strive to emulate. However, characters in the DC Universe like Batman may have varying views on how to tackle crime. Heroes such as Guy Gardner are employed for heroic duties, while Gunn’s inclusion of a group like The Authority in the DCU hints at an emergence of new heroes who might view Superman as outdated or naive – much like the “Kingdom Come” storyline in DC comics. This intricate narrative layer that Gunn is introducing to his Superman film could potentially add depth and complexity to the overall thematic context, if executed skillfully.
The World’s Finest
In a pivotal scene from Avengers: Endgame, Captain America believed he stood alone against Thanos, yet his own legion of Marvel superheroes miraculously resurrected in time to aid him on the battlefield. The poignancy of this moment lies in witnessing Cap, bruised and bleeding, determined to confront seemingly insurmountable odds, demonstrating unwavering heroism that borders on the naive. The emotional climax of Captain America’s valor and his heart’s sincerity being validated by other heroes rallying beside him was a grand spectacle for Marvel. This kind of powerful narrative is what James Gunn’s DCU needs to instill in its rendition of Superman to create an analogous impact.
In this first “Superman” film, there’s no need to hastily arrive at the point where Superman is admired by other superheroes; instead, it should take advantage of the chance to introduce the conflict, ensuring that Superman’s encounters with DCU heroes are as impactful as his regular human interactions.
The Hierarchy of Power (& Friendship) in the DCU
Constructing the DC Universe is a complex task due to the presence of a character like Superman. With divine-like abilities, Superman tends to outshine other characters significantly, leading to numerous practical complications. To avoid fan speculation about the absence or need for Superman in other DC projects – such as “Why isn’t Superman here?” or “Shouldn’t they have called Superman to deal with that threat?” – Gunn and his team aim to address these issues directly and succinctly within this upcoming Superman movie.
it also sets the stage for explaining why Superman, despite his divine powers, must tread carefully around other heroes to avoid causing significant problems.
In a more optimistic perspective, Superman might conclude its narrative by mirroring Steve Rogers’ climactic scene, granting Clark Kent his own mini-version of this moment. This would involve Superman recognizing that he has companions to share the responsibility of saving the world. Transitioning from a lone operator to becoming the central figure of a large, coordinated team of heroes would underscore his significance within the contemporary DCU. Simultaneously, it would provide an explanation for why Superman doesn’t always intervene and resolve all threats faced by other heroes: he believes in their abilities to manage their tasks effectively.
In a unique approach, Gunn is striving to narrate a conclusive Superman movie tale on a scale that few others (perhaps only Lois & Clark) have dared to attempt. Overlooking it as just another piece of franchise-building filler disregards the possibility that Superman could utilize its shared universe format in a manner that is more significant and relatable than any other has done before.
Superman will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
