Joy embraces and becomes one with the star, sacrificing herself to save humanity.
Throughout the storyline, various characters exchange a Villengard case filled with a celestial seed, which has a unique property. As a character grips it, the case automatically locks onto them, forcing compliance with actions that best serve the celestial seed’s wellbeing.
As I pass on the briefcase to another, the character’s movements associated with it gradually cease, and tragically, life leaves their grasp.
Throughout the episode, we witness several characters meeting their untimely ends, among them the Silurian hotel manager, Jonathan Aris, and Trev, a staff member from the Time Hotel. However, by the end of the story, it becomes clear that they may not have perished as completely as one might assume.
Eventually, a holographic image of Trev emerges to aid the Doctor in moving the briefcase and the star seed, with the ultimate goal being to prevent its catastrophic impact on all of mankind.
But, in the end, it’s Joy who sacrifices herself, embracing the star and becoming one with it.
Although the Doctor is heartbroken, she insists it’s not about dying; rather, she’ll persist in illuminating the Earth.
In the concluding moments, we see her carrying out exactly this task, and Millie Gibson briefly appears as character Ruby Sunday. Gazing towards the celestial body, Ruby is shown in the penultimate frame, unveiling that it’s none other than the Star of Bethlehem.
The conclusion for Joy in this Doctor Who Christmas special might appear somewhat grim compared to typical holiday episodes, but the series has a history of such twists – specifically, Joy’s selfless act strongly resembles Kylie Minogue’s guest role in Voyage of the Damned where her character Astrid sacrificed herself to save the Doctor, turning into atoms.
What happened to Joy’s mum?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Joy’s mother passed away, but Joy’s shining success brought joy to her dying moments.
It’s suggested that she turns into stardust and will be reunited with her daughter.
In an attempt to provoke Joy and break her link to the casebox for her safety, the Doctor tries to anger her by some means. However, instead of getting angry, Joy reveals the painful memory of her mother’s passing to him.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s unfortunate that Joy’s mother passed away in a hospital, where Joy had to abide by lockdown restrictions and bid farewell to her via video call instead of being present with her in person.
At the end of the episode, after Joy’s sacrifice, we’re taken back to the day in question.
In a heartfelt moment, it becomes clear to Joy’s mother that Joy has truly shone brightly as a star. With contentment in her final moments, she passes away. As if transforming into celestial dust, her last words echo hopeful wishes of reuniting with her daughter in whatever lies beyond this life.
