Toei Animation has announced plans for a unique celebration of its 40th Anniversary: They’re opening the first-ever permanent Dragon Ball Store in Tokyo, Japan. In partnership with Shueisha and Bird Studios (founded by Akira Toriyama), this store will be dedicated solely to the Dragon Ball series. Unlike previous pop-up stores which were temporary, this new store is here to stay. The official press release doesn’t provide much detail yet, but you can find updates on the store on the franchise’s website and social media channels. This store is set to open this fall.
At the new store, everyone involved guarantees that people will discover exclusive, time-limited merchandise and must-have items, making it an ideal shopping spot for dedicated Dragon Ball enthusiasts. The initial Dragon Ball chapter debuted in November 1984, marking the beginning of one of the world’s most successful anime franchises. Regrettably, the series creator Akira Toriyama did not live to celebrate his creation’s 40th anniversary; he passed away a few months before the November 2024 40th Anniversary on March 1st, 2024. The news of Toriyama’s demise was widely reported, with Latin America and even the French president expressing their condolences for the loss of this iconic manga artist.
Dragon Ball Finally Gets Its Own Store
Numerous Japanese franchises have establishments situated across the nation, with One Piece and Pokémon being particularly prominent examples. Although Dragon Ball is a massive brand from Japan, especially for Toei Animation, its worth has always been associated with its global recognition rather than its domestic success. In the U.S., Dragon Ball Z is closely linked to Toonami and played a significant role in preparing the groundwork for the anime craze of the late 1990s. The Dragon Ball franchise has a strong following in Latin America, with fans in countries like Mexico frequently taking to the streets to watch Dragon Ball Super.
The enduring popularity of Dragon Ball extends across the globe, including English-speaking regions, where its main character Goku has seeped into American pop culture. Today, Goku stands among the select few fictional characters who have had a balloon at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. As for anime, it has gained mainstream acceptance in American culture, with 2025 projected to be an unprecedented year for the medium. Dragon Ball is believed to have contributed significantly to the rise of anime to its current status.
Generally, shops that specialize in a specific brand, such as the upcoming Dragon Ball Store, tend to be exclusive to Japan. Luckily, related parties usually distribute products from these stores globally through temporary pop-up stores. Apart from the new Dragon Ball Store, Shueisha is launching a collector’s box set for the entire Dragon Ball manga titled the Double Cover Box. This box set includes all 42 volumes of the original manga and artwork by some of the most accomplished manga authors in history, created to honor the enduring legacy of the franchise.
