Vitalik Buterin adopts Moo Deng with 88 ETH zoo donation

As a seasoned crypto investor with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the recent turn of events involving Moo Deng and Vitalik Buterin has been nothing short of fascinating.

Moo Deng, a well-known pygmy hippopotamus who gained popularity online, ended up being taken care of by Vitalik Buterin, a highly recognized figure in the world of cryptocurrencies.

As an analyst, I am excited to share that Vitalik Buterin, the visionary co-founder of Ethereum – the world’s second-largest blockchain network – has taken on a new role as adoptive father. This joyous announcement was made by Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand through a post dated December 26th.

“Thank you Vitalik Buterin for joining the Wildlife Sponsorship Program and adopting Moo Deng with a generous gift of 10,000,000 THB for her family!”

“We look forward to working with you over the next 2 years,” the announcement added.

In September 2024, Moo Deng gained widespread fame due to her lively character and captivating social media content, which was disseminated by a zoo located in Thailand.

In reference to the recent announcement, Buterin hinted at potentially increasing his contribution beyond the existing 88 Ethers (ETH) or approximately $292,000, to the zoo. On December 26th, he made this statement in a response.

“I’m happy to be adoptive father to Moo Deng as she grows up over the next 2y and support her with my 10M THB donation, maybe more as I set aside 88 ETH for [Moo Deng] + frens.”

In October, Vitalik Buterin gifted more than $180,000 worth of Ether (ETH) to a biotech charity named Kanro. He transferred these funds to his account under the pseudonym Moo Deng, which appears to be a meme-based coin donation.

Moo Deng memecoin trader makes $3.4 million before 60% decline

The worldwide popularity of Moo Deng sparked the development of a memecoin on the Solana platform. Some investors managed to earn substantial profits before the meme token’s value dropped by almost 60%, nearing its peak.

A savvy investor turned $1,300 into $3.4 million after achieving a remarkable 2,554-fold return on investment on the Moo Deng (MOODENG) token, CryptoMoon reported on Sept. 26.

Some community members became wary, whispering theories that perhaps someone with inside knowledge or a developer might have played a role in the unexpected profit.

Despite the popularity of hippo-themed memecoins, it’s essential to be aware of the risks associated with trading them. For instance, this specific memecoin dropped by a significant 58% from its peak value of $0.62 on November 16, 2024, as per CoinGecko data.

Over 99% of traders on Solana’s memecoin launchpad, Pump.fun, have lost money or made less than $1,000 worth of profit.

Among all the 8.5 million wallets, just a tiny fraction – around 50 – have earned returns worth $1,000 or more, whereas only five wallets have yielded returns ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.

Data from Dune indicates that a single wallet was the only one to earn more than $10,000 from the launch of the memecoin.
