Jack Ryan series co-creator responds to viral clip that ‘predicted’ US intervention in Venezuela

Carlton Cuse, one of the creators of the ‘Jack Ryan’ series, has addressed a scene from the show that viewers are now pointing to as a striking resemblance to the recent US involvement in Venezuela, suggesting it ‘predicted’ the events.

After the US military captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a scene from a 2019 episode of a Prime Video series began circulating online because it appeared to predict the event.

So, in this scene, Jack Ryan – played by John Krasinski – is laying out why Venezuela is such a big deal. He basically explains that because of all their oil and valuable minerals, plus how close they are to the US, they’re a real potential problem on the global scene. It’s a good setup for understanding the stakes.

According to the character, Venezuela likely has more oil and mineral resources than any other country in the world.

Responding to a six-year-old video clip, Carlton Cuse explained to Deadline that the show’s storyline wasn’t focused on predictions of the future.

As a writer, it’s always striking how quickly real-life events seem to mirror things you create in fiction. The aim of that particular season wasn’t to predict the future, but to make the story believable. When you base a narrative on actual global issues, reality often ends up echoing the plot.

He explained their decision to set the second season in Venezuela: “Graham Roland and I weren’t trying to make a political point. We wanted to create a suspenseful, character-focused story that’s based on Venezuela’s important role in global affairs.”

He explained that their main goal was to create a believable scenario, and the story developed from exploring the underlying dynamics rather than predetermining an ending.

The show’s depiction of events in Venezuela concludes with the dishonest president being ousted in an election. This differs greatly from what actually happened, where US special forces were involved in his removal.

As a fan, I really appreciated what Carlton Cuse said about the US using military force overseas. He’s right – it’s something we should always think carefully about. It’s the people on the ground who really suffer the consequences, and they often have no say in what’s happening. I’m just hoping things can eventually calm down and those communities can find some lasting peace.
