As a critic with a penchant for stories that resonate deeply and carry profound messages, I must commend Bill Lawrence and his team for their exceptional work on Shrinking. Being no stranger to the struggles of chronic illness, having watched my father’s battle with Parkinson’s disease, I found myself moved by the authenticity and sensitivity with which the show portrays this condition.
Lawrence’s personal connection with Michael J Fox, his first mentor, adds a layer of authenticity that is palpable in every scene featuring Harrison Ford’s character, Paul, diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The way they have chosen to represent the disease is not only inspiring but also devoid of the usual sadness and tragedy often associated with such conditions.
Their approach seems to mirror Fox’s own resilience and determination in the face of adversity, a spirit that Lawrence admires deeply. I am eagerly looking forward to the third season, as Lawrence’s obsession with showcasing the realities of living with Parkinson’s promises to deliver another compelling narrative.
In closing, let me add a light-hearted note: While I appreciate the heavy themes Shrinking tackles, it’s refreshing to see a show that reminds us that life doesn’t have to be a struggle, sometimes all we need is a good laugh – and maybe a dose of Parkinson’s humor!
Bill Lawrence, one of the creators of the series, shared insights on how Michael J. Fox’s open fight against Parkinson’s shaped the representation of the condition in our show.
In the recently concluded second season of the show, airing on Apple TV+ on Christmas Day, Harrison Ford portrays a character named Paul. At the end of the first season, Paul learns he has Parkinson’s disease.
During an event titled “An Evening with Shrinking” at PaleyLive, Lawrence revealed to the audience that both his co-creator, Brett Goldstein, and Brett’s own father have been diagnosed with the same illness.
“It’s cool to get to write about things you care about now,” Lawrence said.
I’ve been fortunate to have Michael J. Fox as my initial guide. My intention is to portray this relationship not as somber or tragic, but rather as a source of inspiration.
Lawrence and Fox worked together on the ABC sitcom Spin City, which ran from 1996 to 2002.
Fox revealed his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998, while working on the show with Lawrence.
Lawrence stated, “I discovered my first mentor and influential figure in both life and career – Michael J Fox – to be incredibly inspiring.” He continued, “His ability to persevere and work tirelessly more than anyone I know is awe-inspiring. We aim to embody that spirit in our show if possible.
In relation to the approaching third season, Lawrence mentioned his intense focus on depicting the daily life experience of dealing with Parkinson’s.
He admitted to drawing inspiration from those around him generously and learning as much as he could from them. Furthermore, he often tackled challenging circumstances with humor in his real-life experiences.
As a film critic, I’ve come to understand that every author has their unique voice, and after much introspection, I believe my voice is inherently hopeful and optimistic.
