As a seasoned movie-goer who has seen more baking tents than cinema screens, I must say that The Great British Bake Off’s New Year’s special is a delightful treat for me. With a lineup of former Scottish contestants, this Hogmanay special promises to be as enticing as a freshly baked loaf straight from the oven.
From the seasoned Kevin, who had his dreams crumble in custard week back in 2022, to the charismatic Norman, who earned the nickname Stormin’ Norman in 2014, each contestant brings a unique flavor to the table. And let’s not forget Nicky, who baked her way into our hearts during the most recent season in 2023, or James, the runner-up from the third season, who came closer than many to winning the coveted Bake Off title.
The icing on the cake, quite literally, is Lea, the first-season contestant who has continued to bake and won the Hospitality Honour award at The Scottish Food Awards in 2018. But the cherry on top of this delectable lineup is undoubtedly Peter, the young champion from season 11, who won the show at just 20 years old in 2020.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think it’s time for a slice of humble pie… or should I say, a slice of Bake Off pie? After all, they say life is like a baker’s dozen – you get one extra for free! So let’s hope these bakers serve us an extra-special serving of deliciousness in the Bake Off tent this New Year!
In the spirit of the holiday season, The Great British Bake Off is resuming its festive series by bringing back its New Year’s Day special.
Returning on Monday, 30th December, The Great New Year’s Bake Off showcases six previous Scottish competitors for its Hogmanay special. This time, all the bakers are vying to earn the title of the newest Star Baker.
Not only does this event boast a past victor among its participants, but also a previous second-place finisher. This means the race is definitely heated! Ready to meet some contenders? Let’s dive in!

Original season: Season 13
Initially, Kevin graced “Bake Off” in the year 2022, and now, with his apron freshly dusted, he’s making a return to the tent for the upcoming New Year’s Eve edition in 2023.
Last week, I watched my dream unfold into pieces when I ran short on time to craft my custom custard gateau for the competition.
He shared with The Sunday Post that participating in Bake Off was one of the toughest experiences he’s encountered, but despite its challenges, he found it incredibly enjoyable – to such an extent that he’d be willing to go through it again.
Norman

Original season: Season 5
Norman first appeared on Bake Off in 2014 and later earned himself the nickname Stormin’ Norman.
In the tent for five weeks straight, I finally heard the calls from Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood that my time had come to an end.
In relation to his departure, he expressed: “Fame wasn’t my reason for joining Bake Off; I sought some thrill instead. It’s been three years since I retired, and for me, it was a revitalizing journey and an opportunity to connect with new individuals.
Nicky

Original season: Season 14
Recently, Nicky appeared more frequently on television screens compared to several other competitors, as he participated in The Great British Bake Off competition in the year 2023.
Nicky has a deep passion for creating pastries, enjoys baking various types of bread, and takes pleasure in designing festive birthday cakes for her nieces and grandkids.
In week 5, she was asked to leave the tent, and regarding her departure, she commented: “I could sense that my stay would be ending soon after those difficult days, but it still brought a feeling of sadness, and I had to suppress my emotions. The time spent in the tent brought me immense joy.
It was a bit simpler when I left because I wasn’t going alone, and my wonderful bakery friends gave me the most heartfelt hugs, which meant an incredible amount to me.
James

Original season: Season 3
In 2012, James Morton gained recognition as the runner-up on The Great British Baking Show. However, it was John Whaite who claimed the victory that year.
Lea

Original season: Season 1
In the initial season of Bake Off, Lea made an appearance but was eliminated by the close of week one. However, she persisted with her baking passion and in the year 2018, earned the Hospitality Honor award at The Scottish Food Awards.
Peter

Original season: Season 11
Bake Off champion Peter first appeared on the show at 20 years old and won the show in 2020.
Regarding his victory, Peter expressed disbelief, saying, “It’s hard for me to fully comprehend that I’m here, that I managed to get on this show, and that such a show even took place.
“This is going to be a really huge chapter in my life, and what a way for it to end.”
