Gavin & Stacey documentary explains why exactly show can never return

As a devoted fan who has followed Gavin & Stacey since its inception, I must say that the final episode was a bittersweet moment for me. The wedding of Nessa and Smithy was a long-awaited event, but their union seems to have closed a chapter in these characters’ lives that I’ve grown to love over the years.

However, I can’t help but wonder if it’s truly necessary for this to be the last time we see them on screen. Couldn’t we peek into their lives five or ten years down the line? The creators have stated that Smithy and Nessa’s relationship cannot be shown on screen again, which leaves me pondering what might have transpired behind closed doors in Barry or Essex.

But alas, it seems that we are destined to only know these characters as they were at the end of their journey. In the documentary Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell, Ruth Jones and James Corden shed some light on this decision, explaining that once Smithy and Nessa got together, their story had reached its conclusion.

It’s a shame, really, because I was looking forward to seeing how their relationship would evolve over time. Perhaps we could have seen them navigating parenthood or dealing with midlife crises – the possibilities were endless! But it appears that their messy and imperfect romance is meant to remain just that: a fond memory etched in our hearts.

On a lighter note, I can’t help but chuckle at the thought of Bryn and Jason’s infamous fishing trip finally being revealed in the documentary – only for us to be left with more questions than answers! Ah well, such is life in Barry and Essex. Gavin & Stacey, you will be missed.

The popular show Gavin & Stacey concluded on Christmas Day, delivering a finale that captured the hearts of countless viewers and left fans delighted.

At the conclusion of the series, Nessa and Smithy tied the knot, a development that came about after it seemed like Smithy was planning to marry Sonia first.

As a longtime fan of this show, I’ve grown to love the characters and their stories over the years. Having followed their journey from the beginning, it’s hard for me to imagine a world where they don’t appear on screen together again. However, as someone who has watched many series come and go, I understand the creators’ decision to end it here. They’ve put their hearts and souls into this show, and perhaps they feel that the story has reached its natural conclusion. While I would love to catch up with them in Barry or Essex again in five or ten years, I also respect the artists’ vision for the show. Ultimately, I trust that they know what’s best for these characters and their stories, and I will eagerly await whatever comes next from these talented creators.

In the reflective documentary titled “Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell”, Jones and Corden have shared the reason behind the continuation of their beloved characters, Smithy and Nessa, not developing a screen romance. They explained that it’s due to the fact that we, as viewers, will never witness the genuine relationship between these two characters on-screen.

As a movie enthusiast, ever since the very first Christmas special where Dave proposed and Smithy responded with “Don’t marry him,” it seemed as if their story was destined to have an unhappy ending – or so I felt about Smithy and Nessa.

In the final scene, he remarks, ‘It’s imperfect and untidy because we ourselves are imperfect and untidy.’

Jones noted: “Ever since Smithy and Nessa paired up, it seems their relationship is finalized. After all, it’s unlikely we’ll ever witness them cohabiting.

Corden added: “No, it just won’t work.”

The documentary featured additional interviews with Corden, Jones, and the entire cast discussing their experiences on the show, as well as rare, behind-the-scenes footage from different periods of filming.

The conclusion included a swift nod to enthusiasts, showcasing never-before-seen video clips from the legendary fishing excursion undertaken by Bryn and Jason. While the specifics of their adventure will always be shrouded in secrecy.
