James Gunn Teases the DCU Batman: “He Already Exists in This Universe”

As a lifelong DC fanatic who grew up watching the Dark Knight swoop through the shadows of Gotham City, I couldn’t be more thrilled with James Gunn’s approach to introducing Batman in the new DC Universe. The cameo in Creature Commandos was a perfect blend of mystery and intrigue that left me yearning for more.

It’s refreshing to see a universe where Superman isn’t the only established hero, and Bruce Wayne has already donned the cape and cowl. The fact that Batman has been active for some time in this DCU adds an element of depth and richness to the narrative that I find incredibly exciting.

I can’t help but chuckle at the thought of Gunn’s repeated demand for “more silhouette!” When it comes to Batman, less is often more, and a shadowy glimpse of the Caped Crusader is all it takes to ignite my imagination. I eagerly anticipate seeing more of the Dark Knight in The Brave and the Bold, and I can’t wait for the day when he graces our screens with his presence in live-action once again.

In the meantime, I’ll be patiently (or maybe not so patiently) waiting for the green light on Waller, Booster Gold, and The Brave and the Bold. After all, a DC fan can dream, right? Until then, I’ll keep rewatching that tantalizing silhouette of Batman in Creature Commandos, hoping for just one more glimpse of the hero who means so much to me. And maybe, just maybe, he’ll give me a wink next time… if I squint really hard!

Wow, what a fascinating plot twist! In the sixth episode of “Creature Commandos,” titled “Priyatel Skelet,” we delve into the past of Dr. Alex Sartorius (Alan Tudyk), better known as the bone-chilling sociopath, Dr. Phosphorus. This character, funded by Batman’s adversary Rupert Thorne (Benjamin Byron Davis), has been conducting research on nuclear fusion treatments to cure cancer. Unlike the origin story of Bruce Wayne, which won’t be explored in the new DC Universe, our Dark Knight, much like Superman portrayed by David Corenswet, is already established as Batman before his appearance in “Creature Commandos” and the upcoming “The Brave and the Bold.

As a long-time comic book enthusiast and film critic, I find myself constantly yearning for fresh perspectives in the superhero genre. However, when it comes to characters like Batman, who have been around since the dawn of time (or at least the Golden Age of Comics), I wholeheartedly agree with James Gunn’s sentiments.

You see, I remember my first encounter with Batman as a child, the thrill of discovering his dark and complex character, and the fascination that followed me throughout my life as I delved deeper into the rich tapestry of his universe. The idea of rehashing his origin story yet again feels like a missed opportunity to explore new facets of this iconic figure.

Gunn’s approach to the Creature Commandos, where Batman already exists and is well-known within that particular universe, resonates with me. It’s a refreshing take on established characters, allowing for more creative storytelling and character development without being bogged down by the weight of repetition.

In conclusion, I believe that there is immense value in preserving the essence of these beloved characters while also pushing the boundaries of their stories, as Gunn so eloquently suggests with his approach to the Creature Commandos. It’s a delicate balance, but one that can yield extraordinary results when executed skillfully.

The co-head of DC Studios mentioned that the brief appearance of Batman serves as a means to indicate that he is a part of this shared universe. (In a vision, Batman was seen alongside other characters from the DC Universe such as Damian Wayne Robin, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Peacemaker. This vision depicted a possible post-apocalyptic future where all the world’s greatest superheroes had perished during World War III.)

Initially, when the episode was handed to me, it contained more of Batman. Gunn explained, “I kept saying, ‘I’m not prepared to fully embrace him yet, I’m not ready, I’m not ready.’ So I requested, ‘Let’s have more of a silhouette!’ It’s an effective method to imply that Batman is indeed real.

Gunn emphasized that Batman plays a crucial role in this world, influencing it significantly by taking down menacing, terrifying individuals such as Phosphorus.

I’ve been a huge fan of Batman since my childhood, and he’s one of my all-time favorite characters. We have some exciting plans for him ahead – he’s the most famous superhero worldwide! I can hardly contain my excitement to share more about him, together with Superman.

As a die-hard fan of the DC Universe, I’m thrilled to share that the live-action debut of Batman is on the horizon, slated for a role in the upcoming series “The Brave and the Bold,” with Andy Muschietti, director of “The Flash,” at the helm. However, it seems that the DCU Batman movie and the live-action shows “Waller” and “Booster Gold” are still gearing up for production, unlike the upcoming “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” film and the Green Lantern series on HBO, which are set to hit the screens next summer.

Gunn stated during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he’s not a control freak or unhappy person, but when it comes to certain projects like Supergirl, Green Lantern, and others, he feels a deep connection. He explained that some projects are ready to move forward while others, such as Booster Gold, Waller, and The Brave and the Bold, aren’t quite at the level he wants yet.

The first season finale of Creature Commandos premieres Jan. 9 on Max.
