As a die-hard Sonic fan, I’m excitedly watching the growing buzz surrounding “Sonic the Hedgehog 4.” The box office triumph of “Sonic 3” has certainly set the stage for more beloved characters from the games to step into the film world. With the team diligently working on the next installment, it’s only a matter of time before we see some familiar faces. While I can’t predict with absolute certainty which characters will make their cinematic debut in 2027, I’ve compiled a list of potential candidates and actors who could bring them to life on the big screen.
Thus far, the Sonic film series has introduced Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and most recently, Shadow. For those unfamiliar with the games, this is merely a taste of potential new characters. These five seem the most likely to appear if the story continues in its current direction, considering the post-credits scenes. As the franchise expands, actors portraying these characters could rise to prominence, even landing roles like Keanu Reeves and Jim Carrey. Consequently, no character is ruled out for who might play them. However, our picks align more with the characters’ gaming personas rather than star power.
Amy Rose
If you’ve watched “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”, you know that the hammer-wielding pink hedgehog character named Amy will be appearing in the next installment. Her appearance during the mid-credit scene provides a glimpse of her new look and style, which combines elements from her original “Sonic CD” design with contemporary features. However, it remains unclear how significant her role will be, whether she’ll be similar to Tails or Knuckles in terms of storyline influence. Given that Metal Sonic is also present, it appears that Amy could have a substantial part, potentially following the plot of “Sonic CD”. Regardless, we can confirm that she will be featured and fans like myself are eagerly anticipating more details about her role.
As the series progresses, it’s important to find an actress who can consistently embody the character, not just for a single project. This role demands an actress with experience in high-pitched and throaty vocals, such as Karen Fukuhara and Stephanie Beatriz. While Karen is well-known for her non-speaking roles in shows like The Boys and Suicide Squad, she has also ventured into voice acting, showcasing her talent in productions like The Boy and the Heron and Pokemon Concierge. Her feisty demeanor and airy inflection would perfectly suit a hammer-wielding hedgehog character. For those who prefer a higher pitch, Stephanie Beatriz could be a great fit. She has demonstrated her versatility in shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Encanto, showcasing her impressive range and comedic abilities. Both actresses have extensive experience in sitcoms, gaming projects (Stephanie with Twisted Metal on Peacock and Karen with The Callisto Protocol), and long-term commitments, so they are well-equipped to return to the Sonic series for additional adventures.
Big the Cat
In our honest opinion, the fishing-loving cat with the perpetually lost frog is undeniably the one we’re most eager to see. Big the Cat has been a fan favorite since his debut in Sonic Adventure, despite taking a back seat in recent games. It seems that Sonic 4 might follow the path of Sonic CD, but there could be hints of inspiration from Sonic Heroes, as Team Amy includes Amy, Cream, and Big (with Team Sonic already established). Moreover, it’s been confirmed that Big was intended to appear in Sonic 2, although his appearance would have been quite different.
In terms of who would be perfect for voicing the character Big, an unexpected yet fitting choice arises: JK Simmons. Known for his Academy Award-winning performances, this versatile actor has a remarkable knack for voice acting in numerous animated productions. His roles span from the sagely Avatar Tenzin in The Legend of Korra, the enigmatic Ketheric Thorm in Baldur’s Gate III, and the self-absorbed CEO Cave Johnson in Portal series. However, it is his portrayal of the Yellow M&M in the M&M candy commercials that might just tip the scales for Big. The resonant voice and perplexed tone align remarkably with Big’s character. By extending certain words and slowing down his delivery, JK Simmons could make the opportunity to voice Big an offer too good to refuse.
Team Chaotix (Espio the Chameleon, Vector the Crocodile, and Charmy the Bee)
Absolutely! While these seem to be three distinct characters, they often act together because one follows another. A touch of intrigue never harms, so let’s bring in the freelance sleuths from Team Chaotix to crack your case! This trio, comprising stealthy Espio, boisterous Vector, and chatty Charmy, would fit perfectly in Sonic 4, especially if they adopt a strategy like Sonic Heroes. However, any kind of detective work becomes crucial now that Metal Sonic is causing trouble, and with Shadow and Eggman potentially still alive, this could be an excellent opportunity to introduce them (although Knuckles’ second season might precede this).
When it comes to casting for Espío, current voice actor Matthew Mercer is already a great fit due to his rising popularity with Critical Role and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. For Vector, director Jorma Taccone, known for his versatility and comedy skills from projects like The Lonely Island and Hot Rod, could be an excellent choice. Lastly, finding the perfect voice for Charmy is crucial, someone who can strike a balance between adorable and slightly annoying in a charming way – enter Kimiko Glenn. With her extensive Broadway experience and voice acting work in shows like Hazbin Hotel and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, she would undoubtedly steal the show and be a delight to listen to for both children and adults alike.
Cream the Rabbit
Since Big the Cat and Amy are joining Sonic 4, it would be great to round out Team Amy with Cream too. Just like Big, Cream, the rabbit child who loves Chao, hasn’t been around much in more recent Sonic games, but she did make an appearance in Sonic x Shadow Generations. She debuted in Sonic Advance 2 and became a main character in Sonic Heroes. Given that many of her stories unfold in Green Hill, it would be fitting if Sonic 4 takes us back to Sonic’s home world, allowing us to meet Cream and potentially pave the way for future projects featuring her.
You might prefer someone relatively new to play Cream, similar to how Amy grew into her role. Although Cream is depicted as a young child, around 6 years old, it’s not necessary to cast an actual child for the part. A younger actress would be more fitting, and that’s where Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Cailey Fleming come in. Both have shown great promise in their recent projects, with Ryan’s role as Kern in “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” being particularly noteworthy, much like Alyssa Brown was for Maria in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”. Cailey has been featured in numerous hits, such as “The Walking Dead” as Judith Grimes and “IF” opposite Ryan Reynolds. Both can capture the innocence that Cream requires, along with adding depth to their characters.
Rogue the Bat
Working solo isn’t always a given for Shadow, as he often has company. It’s possible that E-123 Omega might make an appearance, but it’s more likely that the burglar bat herself, Rogue, will be his companion. Before the release of Sonic 3, there were many whispers about her character, with Krysten Ritter (whose character, Director Rockwell, didn’t yet have a name) being attached. The anticipation surrounding her inclusion before the trailer could be crucial for Rogue to appear in the next installment, especially since Shadow survived the Eclipse Cannon explosion and might reappear after the credits. She could serve as his guide to adjusting to society, although it would be through an illegal gem-stealing lifestyle.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve always been captivated by the evolving portrayal of Rogue, particularly her new, deeper and sultry voice. If we’re talking A-list actresses, Scarlett Johansson might just be the perfect fit, given her striking vocal qualities and experience with infiltration from playing Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She seems tailor-made for the role, much like Keanu Reeves was for Shadow in John Wick. Moreover, Scarlett’s star power could undeniably boost box office sales, which might be a crucial factor.
However, during some rumors, Sarah Paulson, the star of American Horror Story, expressed her interest in playing Rogue. She told ComicBook that while no one has contacted her yet, she would love to take on the role. If fate aligns, Sarah could definitely land the part, much like how Keanu Reeves got the role after his Speed appearance. If that happens, Sarah would be a great fit for the character, given her impressive dramatic skills in Carol and her knack for deception in Ocean’s Eight. Either way, both choices would make for inspired and fitting portrayals of the winged criminal.
