Silent Witness’s Emilia Fox teases new dynamics: ‘Everything changes again’

I can hardly contain my excitement! In a few short days, the much-loved crime drama “Silent Witness” will be back on our screens with Season 28. Brace yourselves for another round of intricate mysteries that will keep you guessing until the very end. But there’s more – this season promises some fresh developments within the Lyell Centre, adding a whole new layer to the storyline. Can’t wait to see what unfolds!

In this latest installment, Emilia Fox and David Caves are accompanied by fresh faces, Maggie Steed (from Rivals) portraying Harriet Maven, the new leader at The Lyell Centre, and Francesca Mills (from The Witcher: Blood Origin), taking on the role of crime analyst Kit Brooks.

Introducing new elements often brings about shifts in relationships, and this is particularly true for Jack and Nikki, as they are both adapting to their freshly-minted engagement.

“The dynamics between us as actors but the characters changes the feel of it each time.

What a joy it’s been for us to welcome Maggie and Francesca into our Lyell team! The dynamic between your characters, Jack Hodgson and Harriet Maven, is electric from the get-go. It’s quite intriguing trying to figure out who will take the lead at the Lyell Centre in this new setup.

She went on to say: “For Nicky, it’s special to have another woman around during the procedures – you can sense their mutual respect. They delight in interacting with each other, and for me personally, when I perform autopsies alone, it’s a pleasure to have someone to discuss these processes with and learn from as a person.

“Then Fran comes in as Kit and she’s dynamite, isn’t she? The spark and the play.

We’ve recently enjoyed ourselves immensely. It’s fortunate that Maggie and Fran are here with us, making this experience even more special. Indeed, it’s yet another transformation, and I must say, we’re delighted by each phase of our journey. This particular moment has been truly joyful.

Steed further disclosed details about her latest role, expressing: “I’m one of the recent arrivals; my name is Professor Harriet Maven, and I’ve taken over as the top brass, so to speak. It’s quite exciting, though I must admit I find it exhilarating.

She’s partially returned from her retirement, showing signs of intelligence and determination. She doesn’t tolerate foolishness easily, instead, she is deeply respectful and fiercely protective of Nikki and Jack. In some sense, they seem to require this kind of protection as they often take risks.

Isn’t it great how the variety in the show really makes it feel relatable and human? I think that’s one of the reasons it has endured for so long and remains so popular – it’s simply fantastic.

The earnest manner in which it’s executed, along with the commitment to precision, makes it truly captivating. There’s something incredibly unique about its ambiance.

To start off the fresh year, the new season takes its customary place, a time that fans eagerly anticipate each year. The opening episode promises to maintain this tradition of intensity as the team delves into the suspected homicide case of an old lady.

According to the summary for the season 28 opener, “An elderly woman’s demise discovered within a cavern leaves the Lyell team pondering the motive behind such a heinous act against a defenseless individual. The arrival of a new supervisor at the Lyell provokes Jack.

The twenty-eighth season of Silent Witness will debut on BBC One starting from Monday, 6th January 2025 at 9 PM. The second episode will be broadcast the following day, Tuesday, 7th January 2025, also at 9 PM.
