The second season of Anne Rice’s “Mayfair Witches” premieres on AMC this Sunday, continuing the story of Rowan (Alexandra Daddario), who allowed a demon to enter our world by giving birth to it at the end of last season. The first season ended with significant changes for other Mayfair family members, particularly Cortland, played by Harry Hamlin. We know that we haven’t seen the last of Cortland, but it seems unlikely he’ll find redemption in this new season.
In conversation with ComicBook, Hamlin hinted at future developments for Cortland Mayfair and shared his belief that Cortland aspires to be a better person following Season 1’s revelation that he was Rowan’s father, conceived through an assault on Deirdre Mayfair years ago as part of Lasher’s ultimate plan. However, Hamlin expressed doubt about the possibility of salvaging the character’s redemption.
Hamlin stated, “I believe he’s aiming for redemption. He desires to show remorse and strive to improve as a person in Season 2. His father’s reprimand led him to introspect deeply. However, I don’t think his redemption is possible. I don’t see it happening.”
In Season 1, the series subtly developed a complex bond between Cortland and his father, Julien Mayfair, and with Ted Levine, famously known for his role in ‘Silence of the Lambs’, joining the cast in Season 2 as the patriarch, viewers can expect to delve deeper into this relationship dynamic. Hamlin has hinted that things will become “exciting” when Levin’s character, Julien, comes into play; however, for Hamlin, working with the actor was far beyond just the “exciting” scenes. Hamlin described it as his favorite part of Season 2, calling it “outstanding”.
Hamlin expressed that viewing their shared scenes feels somewhat therapeutic to him, as they reminded him of the emotions he felt during filming. Working alongside Levine was extraordinary, and those particular scenes from Season 2 are his favorites.
Beyond Hamlin and Levine, Season 2 of “Mayfair Witches” introduces Alyssa Jirrels, Alexandra Daddario, Jack Huston, Tongayi Chirisa, and Ben Feldman as its stars. The upcoming season will also welcome Gabriel Freilich in the role of Felix, Lestat de Lioncourt’s young vampire from Season 2 of “Interview With the Vampire.” This appearance by Freilich offers fans of AMC’s Immortal Universe their first significant crossover between these two series.
Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches Season 2 premieres Sunday, January 5th on AMC and AMC+.
