In the aftermath of Krakoa’s fall, two members of the X-Men hold opposing views about the future direction, leading to a fatal confrontation. The comic “X-Men: From the Ashes” illustrates the mutants’ evolution following Krakoa, as diverse teams emerge to execute their respective missions. While Cyclops and Rogue’s squads engage in a battle for their former residence in “Raid on Graymalkin,” the younger X-Men are establishing their own presence in NYX. Characters like Ms. Marvel, Wolverine (Laura Kinney), and others are constructing a mutant community within New York City. However, some X-Men still adhere to the old Krakoan ways, carrying both positive and negative connotations.
In a recent announcement, Marvel unveiled a sneak peek of issue #7 of NYX, penned by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, and illustrated by Enid Balam, Raul Angulo, and Joe Sabino. This installment showcases the comeback of Synch (Everett Thomas), who assumed leadership of Krakoa’s official X-Men team following the departure of Cyclops and Jean Grey. Ms. Marvel guides Synch through the mutant community they’ve established in New York City, which appears to be under the guidance of Prodigy. After certain acts of terrorism by fellow X-Men, Prodigy was dismissed from his position teaching mutant studies at Empire State University. Now, he conducts his lessons off-campus, an arrangement that Synch finds objectionable.
Synch thinks Prodigy is peddling a dream to his mutant followers, which could lead to trouble with Sentinels in the future. In other words, Synch believes that the public display of the mutant community will only bring more hardship upon their kind, as humans tend to react violently in such situations. However, Synch’s response to this predicament is also violent; he challenges Prodigy to a fight within the Circle Perilous for control over Prodigy’s leadership position.
An X-Man channels Krakoa’s bloodies form of combat
In the dangerous arena known as the Circle Perilous, the powerful mutants of Arakko could compete for a position in the ruling body called the Great Ring. This council resembled Krakoa’s Quiet Council. While Krakoa had its own battleground named the Quarry/Arena, Arakko had the Circle Perilous. These contests were similar to gladiator battles, and there were only three possible outcomes: victory, death, or surrender.
Storm earned her positions as Arakko’s Regent and Sol’s Voice, as well as a place at the Great Ring, after overcoming Nameless in the Circle Perilous. Krakoa opted for a distinct strategy, with mutants confronting Apocalypse within the Quarry. Primarily, they sought a swift demise to ensure their revival by The Five.
It’s quite surprising to witness Synch resurface only to take issue with Prodigy’s actions. Given that Synch profited significantly from the X-Men’s relocation to the sovereign nation, where he featured prominently in a monthly comic and had a significant storyline alongside Laura Kinney’s Wolverine, it’s not entirely unexpected that he still harbors some connection to Krakoa and its methods. Consequently, Synch doesn’t hesitate to appeal to the Circle Perilous to settle his dispute with Prodigy.
The preview of NYX #7 is below. The issue goes on sale Wednesday, January 8th.
