Telegram answered 900 US requests for user data in 2024: Report

In response to 900 data requests from the United States, the messaging service Telegram provided personal user information. Most of these requests were made following the arrest of its CEO, Pavel Durov, in France.

According to a report by 404 Media published on January 7, Telegram complied with 14 requests for IP addresses, phone numbers, or both from the United States between January 1 and September 30, 2024. Interestingly, it’s said that they responded to a total of 900 inquiries from the US for the entire year, impacting 2,253 users. This implies that the number of requests increased significantly after October.

As a researcher, I’d like to highlight an event that transpired on August 24: French authorities apprehended Durov due to accusations suggesting that Telegram, the platform I oversee, was somehow complicit in facilitating illegal activities. In response to these allegations, I publicly disclosed in October that since 2018, we have been complying with requests from various international authorities by providing IP addresses and phone numbers of alleged criminals. This policy has always been explicitly outlined in our privacy policy.

Due to an ongoing legal matter, French officials have prevented Durov from departing the country at present. In September, it was announced by the CEO that Telegram had surpassed 950 million monthly active users, with many in the cryptocurrency sector favoring the secure, end-to-end encrypted app.
