In May 2025, the villains and complex characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe will have their moment in the limelight with the film titled *Thunderbolts*. A group of morally ambiguous figures such as Yelena Belova (played by Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (portrayed by Sebastian Stan), and John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell) will band together to form a team called the Thunderbolts. The details of what transpires in this standalone movie, as indicated by that intriguing asterisk, remain unknown. However, *Thunderbolts* promises to shed light on some of the murky figures inhabiting a universe shared with Spider-Man and Captain America.
Since we’re dealing with a Marvel Cinematic Universe production, it’s unlikely that the cast list for the Thunderbolts reveals every superpowered character and familiar face appearing in this film. It’s expected that this project will also include villains from previous Marvel movies, potentially setting up exciting surprise appearances.
It’s intriguing to contemplate that five adversaries from the Marvel Cinatic Universe’s history could suitably join the ranks of the Thunderbolts team. Whether they’ll be mentioned or physically appear is uncertain, but speculating about them interacting with characters like Yelena certainly makes for enjoyable daydreaming!
Justin Hammer
In the closing moments of Iron Man 2, the villainous tech genius Justin Hammer (played by Sam Rockwell) declares that the film’s main characters haven’t seen the last of him. Though he may appear defeated, Hammer is clearly far from finished. However, Hammer has failed to fulfill this promise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with only brief appearances in the short film All Hail the King and a single episode of What If…? Otherwise, he has been absent.
After all this time, it could be ideal to reintroduce Hammer in a movie focusing on Marvel villains. Given the Thunderbolts require specialized equipment for their mission, it would certainly be intriguing to see him back in action. Furthermore, watching a regular, non-superpowered individual confront these extraordinary antagonists sounds entertaining.
Baron Helmut Zemo
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about the potential reappearance of Baron Helmut Zemo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following his captivating debut in “Captain America: Civil War,” he graced our screens with a substantial role on “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.” Given his exceptional portrayal as one of the MCU’s most formidable villains, it seems only fitting that Zemo might make another appearance in the upcoming “Thunderbolts” project. After all, who else could claim responsibility for dismantling The Avengers without relying on a super-suit or special serum? With Zemo now firmly established as a recurring character within the MCU, it’s high time he graced the screen once more in “Thunderbolts.
Mac Gargan/The Scorpion
Among all Marvel heroes, Spider-Man stands out for his distinctive roster of villains. It would be a pity to create a film centered around Marvel antagonists like the Thunderbolts without incorporating one of Spider-Man’s adversaries. One intriguing possibility for such a cameo could be Mac Gargan, also known as The Scorpion. He made an appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming as an ordinary criminal, hinting at his desire for revenge against Spider-Man. Introducing him in the Scorpion costume during a Thunderbolts action sequence might offer some thrilling moments. Furthermore, it’s long overdue that this Scorpion tease gets properly addressed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Emil Blonsky/The Abomination
Through “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” and “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” we can see that Emil Blonsky, also known as The Abomination from “The Incredible Hulk,” has undergone significant changes due to an unexpected bond with sorcerer Wong. Nevertheless, it’s possible he might revert to his villainous self in a future Marvel Studios film. “Thunderbolts” could provide the perfect platform for this transformation. Additionally, it would be exciting to witness one of the earliest Marvel Cinematic Universe antagonists make a comeback during Phase Five’s grand finale.
Trevor Slattery
Indeed, Trevor Slattery may not have posed a threat on par with Thanos, Ultron, or Loki within the Marvel universe. Yet, he did collaborate with Aldrich Killian for personal reasons and, albeit unwittingly, leveraged the deaths of innocents to secure an acting career. In his screen time during Iron Man 3, Slattery was associated with evil, but Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings revealed a braver, more honorable side to him. This complexity makes him an intriguing character for potential appearances in Thunderbolts, as he could serve as a symbol of hope for team members seeking redemption. Slattery’s past villainous deeds show that one can rise above their past, and his return in Thunderbolts would allow Ben Kingsley to captivate audiences once more with his charming portrayal of Slattery – offering a meaningful connection to his upcoming role in the Wonder Man Disney+ series.
Thunderbolts* arrives in movie theaters everywhere on May 2, 2025
