Delighted to be following up on my previous fascination with the gripping duo, Martin Clunes and Ed Whitmore, as they team up once more with director Marc Evans for their latest ITV thriller, Out There! After being captivated by their exceptional work in two seasons of Manhunt, I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us this time around.
The trio have all made an appearance at a recent screening and question-and-answer session for the show. This series centers around Nathan, a farmer, as he takes on the challenge of safeguarding his son, who unknowingly becomes involved in county lines drug trafficking.
The phrase “County Lines” denotes a method of drug trafficking where substances are moved from one location to another, frequently crossing jurisdictions of law enforcement agencies and local governments. This activity is commonly carried out by individuals who are susceptible, such as minors, who are manipulated by organized crime groups for this purpose.
During the Q&A session, the three were questioned about their choice to portray county lines drug dealing on-screen, boosting their cultural significance. More specifically, they were asked if they aimed for the drama to create an impact similar to Mr. Bates vs. the Post Office, which sparked renewed attention towards the Post Office scandal and even led to legislative changes.
In response to the question, Clunes explained: “To be frank, it’s not very appropriate to make comparisons when there’s a pending public investigation with known results, which isn’t the case here. I must admit, I don’t know if this is part of our assignment, but we’re emphasizing what we believe is significant and fitting for our drama.
In addition, Evans stated, “We were genuinely moved and taken aback by the response to Manhunt. I believe there’s something unique about true crime narratives that makes one ponder not just the story we’re telling, but also the reasons behind why we’re telling it, and what deeper themes might be at play.
Additionally, Ed skillfully incorporates various themes into his work, such as the second Manhunt game, which delved deeply into the topic of aging, a subject that became particularly relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic when our collective care for the elderly was questionable.
While it might seem lofty to assume that TV could bring about any significant change, I do believe it can stimulate your thoughts and make you ponder about various topics.
In all aspects – acting, writing, and directing – our aim is to blend drama with a genuine feel. We avoid using reality solely for heightened excitement, instead finding that real-life situations are inherently intriguing and dramatic on their own.
Martin Clunes proposed that the drama might influence people’s perspectives on the matter, as he initially held the assumption that it involved teenage boys posturing as macho and acting like gangsters. However, through the series, he came to understand that “it’s actually individuals who are vulnerable and come from various backgrounds” who often become ensnared in county lines drug trafficking.
Clunes stated, “They didn’t voluntarily get involved, rather they were deceived into it, misled into it, and this is quite common. Consequently, they find themselves in a workforce that can be easily discarded, with minimal regard for their health and welfare.
Later on, Whitmore commented: “It might be a touch hasty or even presumptuous to claim you can alter things significantly, but I sense a connection between the evolution of Nathan’s character as he delves into this shadowy realm and the ensuing illumination that occurs.
It seems to align well with many real-life stories, particularly those shared by parents who express, ‘we were largely in the dark, and then enlightenment arrived, but it came too late.’ This sentiment is common, and as you watch our show, we aim to shed light on this world truthfully and authentically.
Additionally in the show Out There, Louis Ashbourne-Serkis takes on the role of Nathan’s son Johnny, Mark Lewis Jones portrays Nathan’s brother Caleb, and the ensemble includes Natalia Kostrzewa, Carly-Sophia Davies, Gerran Howell, and Michael Obiora.
